Cub Lowboy 154

I bought a cub lowboy 154 that had been sitting for a long time. Got it running and hydraulic worked for a little bit. As I ran it more the hydraulics stopped working. Filled the reservoir to the drain plug on the back of the transmission case. Is that correct?? There are several threads suggesting this is the proper way to fill it. What is the next thing to look for? The oil filter seams to be ok. Have a new one coming.

Did you put a new filter on it? What do you mean when you say it is ok? How did you determine this?

What are you trying to do with the hydraulics? Simply raise/lower the deck? Or something else?

Correct, fill until it runs out the plug hole. May have to leave the plug out and cycle it a few times to get any air out. A 154 Lo-boy is a fantastic mowing machine!! Wouldn't hurt to swap that filter..... It's probably old and nasty 🤢

When I bought my 154 the hydraulics were very slow, so I changed the oil and filter. I don't think the filter had ever been changed in it's life! New oil. new filter and it now works as it should. PJ

What oil did you put in the transmission? Has the oil level in the engine gone up?

John, I used the same oil I use in my big tractors, regular hydraulic oil, comes in a 5 gallon can and does well in the cubs. Only thing is, if you have a leaking seal it will show up when it's parked. It's the only oil used on newer tractors for hydraulics and transmissions, makes it nice as you only have to buy 1 oil for all. PJ
