Cub not starting

I posted this earlier in the case forum by mistake.

I picked up a Cub that to my knowledge was running up till when it was parked some time back, 2-3 years or who knows when.
The tank was empty, I replaced the fuel bowl and added gas, new battery and cables. I checked spark at # 1, it has real good spark. It has a magneto and the spark plug wires seem to be in correct sequence. When I try to start it, it makes a cough and all I get is some flames out the exhaust when it tries to start. Starting fluid in the carb intake doesn’t do any good ?

Can the wires be in the right sequence, but installed opposite of firing rotation? Mark.

As was suggested on the Case forum you may have a sticking valve or two. Do a compression test. Not knowing the age of the tractor I would look for at least 80 psi on all cylinders. Some variation is ok but not much. 80 psi is just a guess for a tired motor. Opinions on acceptable reading will vary. You are just trying to determine if any valves are stuck.

I pulled the valve cover, looks like half the valves are stuck.
I sprayed them with blaster and Kroil. I put some of each down the spark plug holes. I ordered plugs and plug wires, the plugs look bad.
Also ordered a carb kit. Might as well look at it while I’m at it.

If I let the valves soak a couple days do you think they will loosen up on their own or do I need to do something with them.

I've had valve free up from soaking with ATF on some and not on others. The Cub I have I had to pull the head and valve cover and remove the valves on one or 2 cylinders to get them freed up

You might be able to tap the valves closed through the spark plug holes,hand crank it around until they are back up and tap down again.... could take 5-10 times.... might take 50 keep spraying a good penetrating fluid on them
