cub throw-out

I'm generally an IH fan, but the 154 is NOT their finest hour. Too big to be a lawn mower, too limp to be a tractor. Wouldn't give ya a quarter for a trainload of 'em.
Man!😲😔......we have owned several 154 ,185 and now a 184. We have used them to mow 3+ acres at church and about the same at home. We love em! Opinions vary I guess. They are a phenomenal lawn mower. We have had very little trouble with any of ours.

I've owned a few,but have worked on a lot of them.Lots of chutches and driveshafts. They are easy to change the clutch in though. The only hard part of that is if the clutch brake pucks have to be changed. You have to slide the transmission flywheel ahead enough to replace them, and it is usually stuck on the shaft. The only other problem peculiar to those models is the steering boxes falling off.You get plenty of warning, the thing will flop around for a long time before it actually breaks loose.I've made a lot of added supports for them, and found out in recent years,(the last ten or so)that a kit is available to weld onto the frame to properly support the steering box.Simple, great upgrade.I've done two with the store-bought kits,I THINK they bought them from Hamilton Bobs.I found them to be good mowers if you keep after a lawn,if you let it go for a week too long the tractor has to work it's guts out.

DON'T buy the regular roller style release bearing. We have one on our Cub now. Every time you push down the clutch there is a violent grinding sound from the clutch (the cheap China bearing in the throwing bearing), the tractor grinds gears, and there is a pile of metal shavings on the mower deck from using the clutch.

IH specifically put a graphite bearing in that tractor because of the way the throwing bearing carrier arcs. It is a different design than normal, which requires a special type of bearing.

We have tried that roller bearing style for a year, and are finished with it. Never going to buy that style again.

Hope this doesn't detract from the thread, but I just wanted to throw this info out there.

I've never seen a carbon throwout bearing for the 154 LowBoy.I looked in the past, and looked again a couple of weeks ago,but couldn't find anybody who made one for that tractor.A couple of years ago I looked for any kind of throwout bearing for a 184,and wasn't finding one.The owner found one somewhere that he was was referred to by Hamilton Bobs.I don't remember what the difference was in them between the 154 and the 184.
