Cummins Smoking

My 300 BC3 smokes sometimes when I"m gearing down going over a hill, but not always. Doesn"t smoke at all idling, starts instantly, quits when I get back into the throttle. The smoke is diesel fuel, but the injectors don"t seem to be the issue because there is no smoke anytime else and the engine starts on the coldest of days quickly.

Already gaulded #1 and don"t want to repeat it. I have no idea what to look for.

Are you sure your fuel is clean?
Winter fuel is a little lighter with slightly less lubricating ability but I don't think this is it.
I'd try a new fuel filter first, it is cheap and easy and it is a maintence item anyway.
Is your fuel mileage okay? No low power?
Hope this gives you some ideas.
Bill.
