Custom Head Gasket

I am going to need a custom head gasket for our Oliver 77, what sources would you recommend?

I had a Lubbock gasket made, supposed to be good for 250# cranking pressure, lasted 5 minutes and the fire ring blew out, they told me too bad but we will make you another one for the same money! This engine was put together with a decked block, sleeves with proper protrusion and a planed head. I would have to be pretty desperate to order from them again.

I also got one from lubbock gasket. after 4 hours on my mill the bores lined up and were round, the dowel holes lined up and the pushrod holes lined up. it is still holding 275 lb compression after a year now. draw your own conclusion from that.

Thanks for the heads up, Hussey has a head gasket in their catalogue for the S-77. Would like to talk to you after the holidays about head gaskets.

So who did you end up going with?
Was the engine knocking prior to blowing the head gasket?

I ordered one from Lubbock, I sent the old one for a pattern. He got close enough on the third try I got it to work with a lot of work. The first two I got were a joke. I had Chad & Earl to make one a couple years ago and its still going.

Well I've got one from Lubbock Gasket, made a pattern, sent it to them, got it back and it fit perfect. Captainhookerus has one from them that did blow but he got one back for no charge I do believe. I know several pullers that have used them and no one else has had any problems at all. I don't believe you would go wrong using them if you make sure it's a good pattern.

Lubbock pos is hanging on the wall as a reminder who to call to waste money! We machined grooves in the head and installed copper wire and siliconed the water passages. As for knocking we raised the comp. .5 by eliminating the gasket and is on the same fuel with no timing change and it doesn't knock now so it sure didn't then. I would have been a little more impressed if they would have knocked a little off the next one instead of saying tough $hit!

Most all the restorers and pullers around this part of TX use Lubbock Gasket and never have a problem. Possibly some of you forgot to express that you needed it for high compression??? That would make a difference I believe, just ask anyone that builds racing engine for cars. Same thing for pulling tractors.

Eric, My experience with Lubbock is exactly the same as yours. I sent them a tapping of the top of my DC block to insure they had the exact pattern I wanted. When I got the gasket , the fire rings were all over the place, overhanging the bore at places, They could not have used the pattern I sent them and got it that far off. I too as the other poster use no headgaskets at all. I cut fire ring grooves into the sleeve tops and use wire and Red RTV. Head gasket and compression leaks are eliminated and I can get the materials at any hardware store instead of waiting on defective stuff. If my experience with Lubbock is typical then the complaints you are reading are justified. mEl

if felpro makes a blue gasket for a ollie i know one of them will hold 350 plus cranking pressure the gauge broke at 350psi . i will also say it had 15 bolts in the head giving a good bit of clamping force and that sometimes alone makes all the difference.
