cutting tires

I have a set of Goodyear 15.9x38's that I have been considering cutting. I pull 5500-6500 in the 3 mph range on a MM UTS. The tires have 30-40% tread. I have never attempted this before, so I'm seeking info on how to do this. Also, what is the best way to cut? Thanks!

I have cut my own tires, and I still freshen them up. I just use a 4 1/2 in. Dewalt angle grinder, with the roughest sanding paper they have. Wear goggles and a mask. But I would have a good tire cutter like Cale M do them to start with. I never won much till I got good tires.

Take them somewhere and have them machine cut. You can always maintain them yourself later. It's the best money we ever spent and I always thought we did a good job ourselves before of cutting. You won't be disappointed.

A hand held planer creates less smoke. May still have to use a side grinder for detail. Planer must be a model with little bearing width on side.

I cut tires for myself and other people and use a seven inch grinder Disc that's carbide made for tire cutting!

I use a 7" course tire cutting wheel to "rough" out the shape of the cut, then use a finer 4" wheel to put the finishing touches on them. Keeps the grinders rotated so they don't get so hot. I put the tractor on a jack, and do about 4-5 lugs at a time - cut the bulk down with the 7", then go back over the same 4-5 and fine tune them with the little grinder. Turn, do 4-5 more. These are for top cuts.

Front cuts are very tricky by hand - lots of patience needed. I've done one set of 15.5's that work nice, but I don't think I'd bother to do another set - especially with something as big as an 18.4. I just don't have the time to bother with it, and I wouldn't want to chance botching a valuable tire in the process as the grinding cup used for cutting the fronts can get away from you a lot easier than a wheel.

Flynn tire Cutting. 765-810-4762. You won't be disappointed and money well spent. It's a nasty job cutting and grinding tires.
