Cutting Torch Question

I have an old Harris model 72 torch attachment on a Harris model 85 handle that belonged to my daddy an d I'm not sure how old it is. Last time I used it the handle got to hot to hold and I turned it off. My question is has anybody ever bought a rebuild kit and put in one of these? Should I take it somewhere and have it done? Or should I retire it and bite the bullet on a new one. Thanks.

There should be a couple of orings where the torch head screws on to the handle. Check them out, see if they're there and in good condition.

take it to a welding shop and have it rebuilt. if the seat is bad the torch can burn back into the handle.

i know you like it because it was your dads and thats great.most welding shops here in ohio you can buy a harris torch set for a couple hundred bucks new torch new gauges 25 foot of hose.somethin to think about.

Look at the O rings on the cutting head, I noticed mine has a broken one on the rose bud tonight. You can polish the seat with a wad of steel wool too. If that does not work, then have it rebuilt.

Talk to Bob. They are great to work with. I send them all my torch heads and regulators to have them rebuilt. They do good work and it is usually reasonable too. I have had them repair the older Smith regulators and torch heads that the local Iowa suppliers say are no longer repairable. The local guys just want to sell you a new set for hundreds of dollars when $30-50 will fix yours.

Also the new Harris torches are not near the quality torch you currently have. The new ones are usually China JUNK.

About ten years ago, I borrowed a Purox 203 OA cutting torch just like the one I had at home to make a minor repair. I noticed the mixer handle getting hot and before I could shut it off, a report like a 12 gauge blew a 1/2" x 1" hole in the mixing handle just ahead of my right hand! I had thought everyone replaced dried out, cracked and separated O-rings in their torches, wrong! I had carefully cleaned the tip before I lit it but I neglected to check the O-rings.
