Cyclone Pre Filter

I've gone through two glass jars and bales in the three years I've owned my 8n. Just the bale alone is $17 plus shipping.
Mine keep getting knocked off by scrub brush when I'm mowing along the edge of my meadow. It's just not practical to always run with the brush on my left side, so the brush knocks the bale loose and I lose the bale AND the jar. I've retraced my path a few times and saved them only to either lose them, or run over them later.

So, my question is.... Does it hurt anything to just not have the jar hooked up? Seems like it wouldn't be much different than having just the plain grill intake on the side without the Cyclone.

Thoughts?

My '49 8N has never had anything but a grille, no bottle.

Since this is a non stop event , why not just remove it totally & replace it with a grill with screen on . Then ship the precleaner to me for my n . I'll even pay the shipping . Email me if interested in parting with it . God bless, Ken

would say that it depends on your use & environment. In east Texas sand, that in places is as fine as a beach, mine will catch a lot of sand when grading or bush hogging. If I were in blackland, I expect it would catch a lot less.

For the pre cleaner to work properly, it must have a tight seal between the jar and cyclone base, and cyclone to air cleaner base. It uses the jar to create a vacuum and you don't want any leaks for air to sneak in and kill that vacuum.

That said - if you do not need the pre-cleaner functionality - the tractor will run just fine and get all the air it needs without the jar.

On a side note, many have used the small mason jars...

Thanks for the replies. We live on a sand hill. As dry as it's been here the dust really flies when I'm running the finish mower on the two and a half acres around the house. Not quite so bad when I'm bush hogging the seven acre meadow.
I guess I'll leave it as is for now. Eventually, I'll order another bail and may try it with a mason jar. Duct tape may be in order also.

used heavy 10-12 GA wire, bent loops to act as springs and it actually even looks presentable. Have to post a picture in a few days
