cylinder head

I know I have seen this, but cannot locate the answer in the archives. I have a warped cylinder head, I can slide a .020 feeler guage under a straight edge between numbers 2&3. What is the maximum allowed material that can be shaved off w/o running into piston clearance issues?

IMHO.. valve clearance issues may be the main concern... either way though.. if you plane it.. lay it on the deck with no gasket and a couple studs or bolts in loose as guides and roll her over and see if the head raises.. etc.

someone else will have to quote you the spec.. still though.. do you know if yours has already been planed any?

A new head from our sponsors.. might be in order.. or if this is a front mount.. John smith has a used head available.

good luck

that's the kicker.. even knowing max plan capability.. you don't know where yours is at.. either plane and check.. or replace.. some gamble either way.

The jury right now is still out on mine...

I'll try to let everyone know how this rides out.

I am not a metal gasket person.

I do believe that the soft gasket, just might just take up for some slack, and give some forgiveness.

I haven't cleaned the head yet and done the dreaded straight edge test on it.

We will see, maybe, as time becomes available.

I don't git in no hurry in my old age...

It hurts bad enough taking my time.

Sometime in the past there have been those that had issues with the heads being cut too much and have taken a hand grinder and taken a "little" of the head out where the piston might come in contact.I've seen these heads shown posted on another site.Seems they work OK.If this were done I would do as Sounder said,,,,put the head on with about4 bolts nuts within about i/16th.Seems also a "smear" of grease on the piston top would tell.I do not know how much can be cut from a head tho.

Kid's Play-Doh works good to see how much clearance it there now or after the cut. Here is one that John had to touch with a grinder.

On my latest rebuild the shop took .008" off the block and .006" off the head to get everything flat. I do not know if head or block had been planed before. Pistons hit head. I used the grease on piston method. Valves cleared OK. I ground down the head as others have indicated. I have no idea how much I took off. I have not started it yet but does not hit when engine is turned. Plan to start in a week or so.
