D-17 won't start

Hi;

I took the battery for charging, and reinstalled it the same it came out with the negative to the ground.
I hit the starter and the engine had speed, but no start. Eventually, it hi t, ran, then quit.
So, I checked the fuel, pulling the line at the carb and had good flow.
I checked the spark as follows: Took off the cap, rotor, dust cap. Turened on the key. I had a weak spark when I separated the points, that was tiny. Should I not have the fat blue spark here? Does this mean anything, or do I need to look elsewhere?
i can"t get over having this problem after just taking the battery out for a charge. Makes me want a charge now!
Thanks

Your strong spark need to be at the plugs not the points. Pull the coil wire off the center of the cap and then open and close the points and hold the coil wire close to the block some place. If you have a good spark then thats probably not the problem. Pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas there. If not you have a problem with the carb, float sticking etc.

Hey man, I take my dog out for a walk and he still poops on the floor when I return. Just because you charge that thing don't mean its workin good. Did it spin the engine over good again after it quit? If so, then it IS OK and you can ignore my dumb analogy above :)
