D14 Quit running

Anybody have thoughts on where i should start trouble shooting. It was cold approx 10 Degrees out and it started right up and ran for approx 1 minute then quit. I can crank and crank and it will not even sputter. Tried again the next day and not even close to starting. I only have a couple hours on the plugs and oil change but have not touched the distributor at all. My first thought is a gas line/carburetor issue ? Yes i have gas in it. The clear glass gas filter seems to leak a lot. Is this an easy fix ? Any thoughts would be very helpful.

The sediment bowl as a cork gasket to seal it to the housing. Often available at dealers and farm supply stores. Shut the gas off with the valve at the sediment bowl housing, loosen the bail that holds the glass bowl, remove the bowl and change the gasket, reinstall the bowl.

Do you currently have the gas shutoff at the tank?

With a pint or larger container in hand, Gas shutoff valve turned on, Pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carb bowl and catch what comes out. Time how long it takes to get about a pint.

Has it been setting an extended time?

6 or 12 volts? Original or conversion? Positive or negative ground?

Do you have a test light? If so, ground the lead and put the probe on the terminal of the coil that has the small wire to the distributor connected to it. The light should flash on and off as the engine is cranked with the starter, if the points are working.

It the light does not flash try cleaning the contacts of the points with a piece of uncoated card stock, a piece of brown paper bag or even a folded-up dollar bill. Put the paper between the closed contact and rub it back and forth some, then try the test light again.

Those are a few easy things to start with for checks.

It had been sitting and last ran in July. I always keep premium gas and some Sea Foam in the tank. Where is the gas shut off at the tank ? I have had this tractor for a short time and just havent had time to get familiar with it yet. Everything else you mention makes perfect sense.

When you have the sediment bowl off slip a hose over it and try blowing up into tank. Might have some ice on there.
I've seen the sediment bowl completely full of ice on some of the older models of Allis tractors. The older tractors vented gas caps wouldn't seal tight and water would get in. That and condensation. Our tractors were kept outside.

The gas shutoff is the wing tab handle that turns, right above the glass sediment bowl, unless some has removed the original and installed one without a shutoff. The valve is above the sediment bowl so you can shut it off to service the bowl. Turned in shuts the gas off, turned out is gas on.

Thank you all for the suggestions as i will take a look at it when i get another chance.

Briggs and Stratton makes a handy little spark tester you put on the end of a spark plug wire that will tell you if you are getting a good spark. No holding the wire close to a ground or maybe getting zapped. That would eliminate ignition. It does sound like it isn't getting fuel. You could try a little ether in the carb as cranking to see if it fires. If it fires on that even for a second you have a lack of fuel.

My D-14 just had a similar cranking and no sputter, nothing, problem and I found no spark....none and it was running a few days earlier. It was the Pertronix electronic points replacement that went bad. It was the first time in 15 years and 6 different units in various vehicles and tractors that one failed. Replaced it with one from another unit to confirm and have since put a new one in. Took more time to order it than it takes to hook it up. Back in business.

I am always reminded of the wisdom of the old mechanics thought.... " if it seems fuel related, think electrical, and opposite"
