d17 runs rough

my d 17 is not running right i replaced the coil and points still runs rough back fires through the exhaust idles smoth but when u rev it up it gets rough any idea's i could use the help thanks dave

I would take the carb apart, soak it, and put a kit in it.

A new set of 45XLS spark plugs solved my problem.

i changed the plugs plug wires coil and points rebuilt the card and still backfires through the exhaust misses takes gas poorly as well hmmmmmm any other ideas where to check thanks David

Sounds like it has to be fuel or ignition. Is the gas old? Make sure the sediment bowl is not plugged. Un hook the fuel line from carb and see if you get good fuel flow. Pull one plug wire "one at a time" to test for a bad plug or wires. If this does not work try spraying carb spray in the tractor at faster RPMs to see if it smoothes out. If it does you may have something plugging your carb and it may need a rebuild.

Acdave:

I had the same problem with my D-17.
Turned out that the yellow wire from the coil to the ignition switch had a BAD connection on the ignition switch.
Cut the bad end off and crimped on a new terminal and never had a problem since.

It could also be bad wires, or a manifold leak.

Backfire out of exhaust is timing too late, backfire out of carb is too early!
