Looking for a few things for my 1959-60 D17 (s/n 184xx)

1) the parking brake cam. I think I have the pin and I can find or make one on pg 63, original manual, refered to as "brake latch"

2) what is the largest dimension battery that fits in stock batterey tray? Shouls I use a traction (deep cycle) or standard cranking battery. I'm still running original generator.

3) a battery hold down top bracket....if anyone has such a thing.

Contact via above e-mail, I check frequently, except on weekends....Thanks all!!!!

Goldman, I'm probably not the best to answer your post but I'll share what I know and hope someone else joins in.

1) It would be quite difficult to make the brake lock without a CNC mill or a machining center. It has an elliptical shape that is hard to duplicate without a computer. If you are desperate and just can't find one, email me and I'll pull mine and make an outline of it. You'll need to use a hand grinder to make it if you don't have the computer tools. I sure wouldn't recommend trying it with a grinder though - I suppose it could be done.

2) When I got my D-17 diesel, it was set up for two six volt batteries (from the factory). So I bought two six volt batteries. It started good. When those 6 volt batteries died, I stuck a regular 12 volt battery in there and discovered that the tractor started better. You definitely don't need a traction battery. I think the gas tractor uses a 12 volt battery. Just measure the battery box and go buy the around 650-750 CCA (cold cranking amps). That size starts my diesel just fine so it should have no difficulty with a gas engine.

3) I don't have a battery hold down on any of the 15 tractors that I have. I can't imagine the need for one. The battery should be secure by the lips on the battery box (left and right and front and back). Probably others would have a divergent opinion but I sure haven't ever needed one. If the battery is coming out of the box, I would recommend reducing the speed by two gears.

Thanks! I hope I don"t need to grind one! Hopefully there is one out there for me....I don"t foresee having the battery bounce out of it"s tray, nor do I drive so it will fall out...it"s one of those lessons you learn and hopefully you don"t continue to learn...always tie down the battery. I have no idea what would cause it to fall out ( a side slope, hitting a rock?) but do know if it falls out it will be a bigger mess and problem than the couple dollar hold down.
