Have a 5U series D2 with a grenaded #1 piston. Have the head off, got the rod cap off through the hand hole in the side of the block, but the piston doesn't come up through the sleeve. It seems the rod big end is larger than the cyl bore. Any tricks to get the liner loose with the piston/rod still in it? I have a sleeve puller but the piston seems to be in the way. I'm near my wits end, and am ready to stick a wood block between crank throw and big end of rod to try to push it out with a 3/4 drive socket-ratchet with a cheater. Is it possible to drop the rod-piston assembly down through the bottom into the crankcase to either get the sleeve puller in or to pull the snap rings on the wrist pin and take it out in pieces? Trying to avoid pulling the engine. Also, any ideas for parts? Is it likely that CAT will have a piston available?

hello dsldr ,,you need to pull the rod and piston out the bottom ,turn big end around out of the way and they pull rod/piston down and out .

Yes you should be able to removed the rod and piston at bottom motor with turning crankshaft me I dismantled many d2 motor but I all time removed the crankshaft before.

Where are you located. Have a cat d2 that had a $4600.00 cat restoration 6 years ago. Will sell the entire unit for $2,800.00

Finally---
Got the rod and piston out... but not without problems. Top of piston was broken off and in a million pieces. As we all know now, the rod will not come up thru the liner. Furthermore, it will not come far enough out the bottom to be out of the way enough to use a sleeve puller. Be advised, this engine is still in the crawler, and the pan is still on. It will not lay down in the pan out of the way--there is not enough room. I tried the porto power to no avail, pried, pulled, and I think I might have even swore a few times. After dinner I went back to the deed, used my noodle, got out the sawzall, hacked the top of the piston off, (it was already broken) dropped the rod and piston down, layed it down in the pan, stuck my sleeve puller in, and presto- I had the sleeve out and the rod and piston in my hand, with the answer I was expecting...yes the rod was bent----a lot. The hard part is done, it should go back together much easier. Thanks everyone for all your help, and I'll tell this guy about the resto D2. See if he wants a spare. Does it have a winch? He works gas and oil wells with it.
