D239 timing question

I have an international backhoe with a D239 motor and it has been completely rebuilt. It runs well but starts hard and I believe that it is the static (fuel pump) timing. Does anyone have the specs or can you tell me where to find them online.

Do you have a lot of white smoke when you try to start it cold? 50-50 chance I have the spec but I need more information. We have a 239 and I am sure it is different.

It cranks longer than it should and smokes black - It is in an international 3500a backhoe - the block stamp is DT239 - but it is not a turbo, I believe that the engine was replaced before and they probably used another block.

If you got a Bosch injector pump a special adaptor and dial gauge is screwed into the back of the pump to check/set the static timing,doubt if it out unless you altered it during the overhaul,the best site for IH info is Redpower at the link below,you will need to register to post on that site,it"s free and easy.

Lee I have a 3500a and the block is stamped dt239 also. It does not have a turbo either, according to the people I've talked to the 3500a didn't come with a turbo. I wish it had one, it will barely move itself in high range and not at all on any sort of a grade. I will dig out my books and see if I can answer your question about timing. As a quick thought is your fuel shutoff lever properly set for starting? If you look on the pump it should be just off of the little plunger at the other end of the cable. Good luck, Mike

Thanks for the help - Im rebuilding an old house and just got back to working on the backhoe, would appreciate the specs if anyone has them. I also have another question. I was running the backhoe and have no hydraulics to speak of, I have not looked into it but was wondering if there is any bypass switch or saftey lockout that has to be set to operate the bucket and the hoe.
