NOS Ford Piston and pin for a 401. Maybe an 8600?
Has that oddball wedge shaped upper ring.
I have a set of 3 of them.
Called the parts man at NH yesterday and he said I can buy a set of rings for $23 a hole.
Would you use them in a 201?

I dunno what they're for so I wouldn't speculate on their use... If it's got the top keystone ring and a 1-5/8" wrist pin I'd say it's a turbo piston so that leaves it looking for a 7xx0, 9xx0 or TW2x0 and TW3x variant.
I've contemplated installing a set of those into a 201 but I'm still stewing over balance issues...
Best thing is to call your parts man back and see if he can dump that numebr into PAL and see what it traces back to. I can't seem to find a way to do that online.

Part # D4NN6108T is replaced by E0NN6108AA, which is listed to fit the 201 cid engine. It may possibly supersede from there, but I stopped once I found it. It is a Std. size piston. Use with the DJPN6149W ring set.

Mark, Michael,
I know the time a guy can spend looking up parts...
Thanks
Rod, tell me about the balance.
Piston weight?
On a 201 an old piston would weigh close to a new one yes?
And a gasser would weigh close to a diesel?
I could probably get the 3 types on a scale.
What am I looking for? Grams? 1/4 oz?
How much between individual pistons?

I dug out my old PAL CDs. D4NN 6108 T was originally listed as a standard size piston for an 8000. It has since changed numbers multiple times, and can now be used on a 201 as well. This makes sense, because a 201 is basically a 401 split in half.

Bingo....
One of those daydreaming projects I've had since a while. Something I'm saving for when I have more money than time.

I am at a loss as to what you are working towards?? Are you going to install all 3 new pistons? If so, why would balance be an issue? If installing all new, balance should not be an issue, particularly if all 3 pistons are marked with the same D4/T part #.

And then you question difference between gas & diesel?? I reread your post with regards to the gas/diesel question. Are you asking if a piston from a gas will work in a diesel or vice versa? Your original question was, could you use them in a 201. Yes to that.

Please elaborate some more. I am more curious now:)

Rod made a comment about balance.
Without speaking for him I wondered if he meant these pistons might be heavier or lighter than a standard - non turbo - piston. I have a used standard piston I could weigh and compare weightwise to these. I understand they would be somewhat lighter due to wear. I brought up the gas pistons as just another type that I could weigh, since we know the cranks for a 3 cyl are the same for gas and diesel.
I was mostly thinking out loud - trying to understand his comments about balance.

I've always thought that would be a good project too, although I've never gotten as far as trying to line up parts for it.

Thank-You, I was wondering. If you wanted to compare some piston weights on 201 engines (diesel), post the casting # out of a piston in question. I might have some used 201 pistons, and I know I have (1) new gas piston in stock. I could weigh them for you to give you some comparisons.

I may just go cheap and slap the turbo on the N/A engine yet. Ford did do that themselves... both with a 4610T for a special market (I think ) and with the later 192T that they used in the last of the 30 series. At least tehy had the same wrist piston and crank as others of the vintage without turbo. But... they dodn't go giving it a lot of smoke either.
One application I have is a 3930... It's just a little doggy and I want to knock it up to 65-70 PTO so it bounces along a bit faster with the weight it's carrying. My other daydream is a 201 powered Ford Ranger... A 4 cylinder is physically too large and heavy.... so the thought came to me... why not turbocharge and intercool a 201, then back out the stops in the pump. It could in theory make about 105 gross hp with the CAV pump. Just don't know how long it would last without the turbo pistons let alone the nitrided crank.

I made the comment about balance.... and it's because I don't fully understand, at least to my comfort level... the dynamics and harmonics of engine balancing. What I'm talking about doing is taking a turbo piston from a 268, with appropriate rod and inserting that into a 201... where it will be wound for sound.
If you look at the 4 cylinders closely you find there are differences between the dynamic balancers on different engines... and I don't know if that's entirely because of differences in piston/rod assembly weight or because of changes in harmonics.
I also want to run that 201 up over 2600... in theory... so it does need to be quite finely balanced.

That's more or less what I've been thinking... simply because the load factor is not all that high most of the time. I just want something that will be able to torque along at 1800/65 mph and not be entirely gutless. Ranger I've got now with 3L is about 150 horse max and I haven't figuered out the actual at 2500 but I suspect it's well under 100 horse. 3L does't even torque up until 3 grand, then holds torque... so it's a very top ended engine. I just don't want one of these terrible little gutless wonders that will haul anything at 30 mph and then run out of wind at cruising speed...
Be a neat, although rather impractical project.
I know there's people out there that fitted VW TDI's to Rangers... but I'd feel like a heretic.

May be waiting a while on the pics... this one is still just stweing.
I had actually planed to go with a granny gear transmission and fast rear. Compromises.... I've got an M50D reasonably geared on 3.55's that may work...

You have me interested, keep me posted on this!
FYI
I did own a 86 Ranger with a 4 cylinder Mitsubishi turbo diesel.
It was very fuel efficient, but not a power house. The top end was about 140K/H in 5th gear; RPM was up around 3600 - 3700
110 K/H had the motor about 2700 RPM (in 5th gear)
All this is from my shady memory.

Brian

This project may be a ways off yet. I was just pricing new trucks the other day... so mabey within the next year I'll move on that, then the old one can become a donor for the project. Still need to find a 201 engine as well... so. We'll see.
For sure there will be a story if I ever get it done.
I also want 'everything' to work so that may take some cyphering and figgerin when the time comes.
