My fiance and I have a small grass based dairy in the Catskill Mtns of NY, milking about 30 or so, mostly Jersey (one registered) and the rest are cross breds. We are just taking our first baby steps into the world of making ice cream from our milk. We have Olivers,
770
1650
1655 FWA/loader
1955 FWA
White 2-85 FWA
American 60 FWA (silver)
two Farmall H's
Farmall M
Ford NAA
8N
and a borrowed IH 756

We almost added an Oliver 550 this weekend but it turned out to be in not as good of shape as advertised. Still looking for one, though.

Ous small family farm milks anywhere between 15-25-30 Holsteins at any given time, ussually floating right around 25. Total herd of about 50

We've got:
Oliver 1855 Diesel
Oliver 1600 Gas
Oliver 1755 Diesel, not running
Massey 285 Diesel
Massey 165 Gas

A little bit of everything for the rest of our equipment.

Question for any or all of the "30 cow guys"- are you making a living off the dairy alone, or do you have others crops and/or off farm jobs? We had 35 cows back in the '50's, but about the smallest dairies I know of making a living from it now have 100 or more. Are any of you "organic"? Thanks for any replies.

to the fellow that asked if we are organic, no we are not. my uncle how runs the farm has an exevating company also. i personally am a sr in high school planning to milk cows after graduation. i personally have 1 milking cow and three heifers. and i own a bull. his sire is arlinda chief. some vintage genetics there

Sold those black and white pains in the neck going on 4 years ago. Family had milked cows here since they bought the place in 27. I did it myself for 33 years. It's true, everything they say about getting rid of them. There's life after milking cows. You can't believe how much more money you'll have after you get rid of them...to qoute a few.We generally milked around 50-55 at any one time. I keep around 75-80 angus and angus cross cows on pasture now and use the feed I used to put through the dairy cows to finish their calves. More cattle on the same number of acres. More money in the bank and a lot fewer bills. Have Oliver 66,70,77,1550,1600,1850 and White 2-135.

you've got an own son of pawney farm arlinda chief?Holy cow lol.That was quite a bull back in his day.We milk between 60-70 holsteins,most are purebred,mostly commercial though,although we use good genetics.All ABS sires now,some Dundee,lots of Bolton,bit of Kite,Garrison,Drake and so on to name a few.We run 2 M8200 Kubota's and a 3505 mf,and have a 57 mh 333 diesel for a toy.pd

Hi! I'm originally from the susquehanna Valley too. I remember my dad milkimg 40 or so cows when growing up. My grandma was from new columbia and milked 35+ cows by hand and they farmed 200+ acres with a farmall h and 65 massey. They soon retired after interstate 80 split the farm up. Remember the hard long days but our grandparents had it harder. Have Fun

Milk 35 guernseys 60 some head total almost a century farm. 105 white,1855mfwd,1855,5-550 olivers, 1941 farmall A grandpa bought new

Mom works off the farm and dad is currently unemployed, but that's cause he lost his off the farm job. We seem to be doing ok with him home the last few months, except the part about them not having any health insurance, but the price of milk is up and we haven't had too many major tractor repairs this year. Overhauled the 285 this spring, that's it so far for tractors in the shop. Knock on wood.

I work off the farm and will be moving out pretty soon, but still plan on doing the field work with dad.
