Dead Tractor

1968 JD 4020 LP Gas. I cranked this tractor about two months ago. It ran fine. I cut the key off. In a couple of days I returned. The motor would spin over but it would not start. The engine would not even hit. It spins over very fast. I replaced plugs. Nothing. I replaced the electronic ignition. Nothing. Coil. Nothing. I'm getting plenty of voltage and plenty of spark. Nothing. Not one hit of the engine. Had 15% fuel in tank. So I filled it up. Nothing. I don't know what else to do. So this evening I am going to have a funeral for it and afterwards-bury it. Obviously the tractor has died.

So you have spark, you still need fuel and compression. Just because there is fuel in the tank ,that does not mean that it is getting to the motor.

If equipped with oil bath air cleaner is oil up to the line in the cup??
How long since parts key #12 has been changed?? Can you hear parts key #3 click when ign key is turned to ign????

I would try to eliminate some systems. Disconnect as much air cleaner as you can and see if you get different results. Then try a shot of gasoline to the cylinders to see if it will fire. if no luck check timing, then do a compression test. sooner or later you will find the problem.
good luck

if you pull it it will start, you might have a hole in diapham, and the kits at john deere are 500.try pulling let us know.

We did exactly the same thing with a 70 propane we have. It had sat in a barn and culdntbget itbto run. We cleaned up the regulator and all the throttle linkages and butterflies. Put it all together and it ran good, next day it would not run, barely hit even when pulling it to start it, finally unhooked all the breather and it still wouldn't hit. I sprayed some stuff at it and pop pop pop but it wouldn't run, finally took the air breather system off, all of it and found the mud dobber nests had it all plugged up. Cleaned that up and put it back on and now she runs perfect, the propane needs to pull vacuum to work. Ours wont run at all if the breather isn't connected, hook it back up and it never misses a lick. Clean your intake breather up all the way from the precleaner to the intake. That fixed ours anyway.

Yes. I have pulled it all over 40 acres with not a single hit. And yes, TxJim. It clicks. I even get the hiss from the regulator when I push in the diaphram. I will check the air system but I am not real confident that that is the problem. I do believe that it is NOT getting fuel. Just don't know why not.

take dist cap off and turn over with key switch and see if points are firing. If your getting fuil and spark it will run. Also water levels need to be cked.and also take radiator cap off and see if you smell lp.Another thing is correct starting , pull fuil lever near shut off or very low idel. lp is just the opposite of gas , if you take fuil away it chokes it if you give it throttle it takes it away. You need to understand lp tractors.
