Deer and pest control

That's the four-legged horse-like variety.

Now they're becoming a problem here in Iowa this year. And I've been of the mind that if something comes on my property I can rightfully watch it let out a death cry. But I got to talking to the neighbors and they seem to think that if you shoot a deer there's a hefty fine involved. Now I watched one wander through my yard this morning and I've been wondering what tore up the boards piled in the gutter in the farrowing house, so I want to know if I'm within my rights to drill ol' bambi in the beaner with a .22.

Where have you been! A person here in Iowa was just fined $1500 + for shooting a deer that was damaging his trees.

Contact the DNR and they can give you a license to shoot some anytime, but there are details.

You might just want to check with the conservation department, it could save you a bit of money and a jail stay.

...wandered right through your yard you say? I don`t doubt it, but tearing up stuff in your farrowing house... look for a masked bandit that did that.

No you are not within your rights. They'll have to find a carcus to prosecute however.

You can get a land management or wildlife permit but you'll have to keep records and probably jawbones.

Ground with a little pork, venison is pretty good meat.

Mix two eggs in a small bowl, blend well with 1/2 cup of water, then pour into a sprayer with 1 gallon of water. Spray on your plants and the deer will leave them alone. Spray frequently to keep them away. In areas where deer are in great numbers it is prudent to just build a deer fence to keep them away from what they consider their food supply. It also pays to find out what they do not like and plant that around your yard for landscape. If you really want to help the game dept coffers go ahead and pop a few of them. ;-)
Another thing deer do not like, is a dog that will chase them away. Mine doesn`t !

Don't know about where you are but here it will cost you $500-1000 for shooting one out of season and also you loose your gun and hunting rights for something like 5 years

I can't speak for Iowa, but here in Ky if deer are causing crop or other damage for that matter, you do have the right to protect your crops and property. There is a permit that can be obtained that lets kill any and all that are on your property. There are to many of them. Makes car insurance keep getting higher.

Well, if your not opposed to huntimng on your land, I am sure you would have no problem finding a family that woould LOVE to have some land they could deer hunt on year after year. Most times you develop a great relationship them and get some help also at certain times of the year. I know I am looking for just such a thing in MN, I have an extended family of deer hunters and we are looking for some land that needs the deer population trimmed every year, heck I even have the farm back ground to help out if some one was interested.

Dave has a good point. We, for example, lease land in TX just so we have a place to go and shoot those critters. I'm sure you could find people like me to pay you to come and kill them during hunting season. In the off-season however we feed them a high protein diet which aids antler growth and body mass, which doesn't seem in line with your game management philosophy. Deer hunters want to propagate the herd.

You could just shoot them with a shotgun (like No 4 shot)or smaller gun that won't kill them and they'll get the idea they're not wanted. A dog is a good idea also.

This is just a lttle off but funny. Here in South Jersey there are always plenty of ground hogs. The neighbor had one under his shed. It was smarter than him cause it wouldn't go in a heart trap. One of his friends told him what to do. First thing in the morning when it is GOOD and STRONG,,,"P" in a big bottle. Now go out in the yard and pour it down his hole. The furry little guy LEFT!! Isn't it amazing, the deer have more rights than the property owner. On second thought maybe not so amazing doesn't everyone have more rights than the property owner!

In Ontario you can be charged according to the MNR for doing anything that "harasses" deer or any game animal. You don't even need to hunt or shoot them in the off season.
If a Conservation Officer or OPP want to. They can bust you for driving near enough in the field to scare deer or blowing the vehicle horn and scaring them. Penalty can be thousands in fines and loss of your hunting license for years.

Depending upon the distance involved, my bro uses a wrist-rocket type slingshot w/a ball bearing, aimed towards the hind quarters.


A paint ball gun might work, will definately tell ya if they're stupid enough to come back for more(big grin).

If you are in a rural area then perform the 3S rule.

1. Shoot

2. Shovel

3. Shut up.

(This also works with the bothersome neighbor dog)

I appreciate your concern but first check with local DNR. Be sure you do this as most states pass laws that general public is unaware of until busted for violation. Should be able to get a predation permit or nusiance permit.

Here in FL biologists must first come to inspect damage and estimate crop damage so be prepared for that if need be.

Secondly as Dave from MN mentions if enough property consider leasing hunting rights or provide access to DNR for youth hunts. If small parcel consider some bow hunting (PS - just got me a new Martin bow this yr.)

I am volunteer Hunter Safety in FL and helping drive the YHEC and YHPF efforts. I hunt FL, GA, TX and this yr. KY. As a hunter and conservationist I really hate to see venison wasted so consider (rules permitting) donation to Boys Home, Elderly Home etc.

Hi Dan,

Randy and Roger are correct, you need to ck with the IA. DNR for damage permits.

The DNR doesn't assume liabilty for you damage, but their proud of "their deer"

Come fall they charge me almost $60 for a local deer tag, It might be higher this year ? Heck they charge my brother from MN. almost $400 for an out of state tag and then if we choose the first season we get a whopping 5 days to shoot one. Course you may also get another tag if you qualify but that costs more money.

Yep their proud of "em.

Serious criminal charges can be levied and priveleges lost! Do not do this. Humanely kill the animals as needed and donate the meat the those less fortunate.

It is this type of mentality that causes increased laws on the books!

In Kansas you can shoot them as pests on your own land but you can't process them in any manner, have to let them lay and rot or dispose of the body. I don't think you can even allow your dog to eat them.

Roger got it right in the first answer. That case was all over the papers and TV for weeks. I don't know how you could have possibly missed it...$1500 fine for a deer that was doing damage to his trees. The guy wanted to make a test case out of it. I don't think you're going to get the DNR to issue a damage license for deer that are simply messing up some boards. If you can prove crop damage; maybe.

Don't know what part of KY your in but in this part the guy who gives out permits is not much. I know of several people who have called him and called him to come out and look at thier crops he will not return calls or show up. Most people round here just deal with it thier self and go on. There are some great people who work for KDFWR, the guy out of the Calhoun office just ain't one of them. Years ago the county CO would come out and look at your crops and hand out tags if you needed them. Not amy more, I sure miss those days. Ronnie was pretty nice about it.

I am in Montgomery county. I take care of the deer myself also, but I have gone on several hunts in other counties that were due to crop damage permits. I don't know how hard it is to obtain a permit for this, but they can be had.

Our local game warden told me that exact thing. He said and I quote kill all of them I wanted to as long as you don't remove the carcass from the property. I ask could I eat them or give the meat away and was told to leave them were they lay.

I know they are given out. The guy over this part of the state won't. When it was up to the CO in each county it was easy round here, now they are hard to get. It is just easier to do things on your own and be done with it. Been a LONG time since I read in the county paper about some in for hunt'n deer in summer.

My neighbors, who farm thousands of acres, get block permits from the DNR. One year they took 200 deer out of one section near my house. I haven't seen that happen in at least ten years tho. Now they are leasing the hunting rights out, making pretty good bucks, too.
