Well so far 4 days into season I have shot 3 deer, all big does and we still have 7 days left of this season them in Dec. we have another 8 days of doe season, so maybe I'll have enough meat to last till this time next year

thats great,here in Ga. our rifle season has been in for just over a month with 1 month of bow and 1 week of black powder before that.Season lasts till Jan. 1st. and I still haven't seen any deer in the woods usually by now I have 3 or 4 so my year is off to a big no meat year looks like I might have to check with the cooler for some left behind. OH! here either 5ex all season with antler restrictions 10 does 2 bucks with one of the bucks must have at least 4 points on one side.

I see they still allow bow hunting. By the end of bow seasion I wonder how many deer are dying a slow death from a infected wound from a arrow. Benig shot is bad enough. No I don't belong to the tree hugger group. I just don't like to see animlal suffer needesly. Stan

With all due respect Stan, I have never seen a deer suffering the way you describe. Maybe it's because we have more snow here which makes tracking easier. Maybe it's because I just don't see them. Most of my bow hunters shoot from a tree stand and wait till they get real close. Also, during bow season, we have wall to wall hunters out there. Deer hunting here is something akin to a holy day of obligation. As far as I'm concerned, I'm glad to see them shot any old way. We have black powder, handgun, bow, shotgun only, rifle, etc. Who knows? They'll probably go to a lasso season next.

I never thought of a lasso season. Here in Mi it's always "Hit em with a car season". Last day or so I saw maybe 5-7 deer plastered on US127 north of Lansing area, With in a few miles.

Here in WV they will run over you if you stand to long in one spot . Are Overpopluated Have been 45 killed by cars in one 5 mile strech of state highway near hear . Last year my a friend of mine went to the mountians hunting while he was gone his wife killed a 8 point with car , he went back turkey hunting his wife killed a turkey with a car she had better luck than he did but sure is hard on the car .

I hate to rain on the picnic. but deer hunting here has got to be worst in the nation has been for 30 plus years. at one time we led the nation as the best of the best. We would give anything to have that 5 dear limit or so many being hit by a car the season gets exstended. I am being honest you can ride for hours a day in and out and are very lucky to see a deer period!! Other species are in the same boat. Top it off with the bad unethical hunters i just had to deal with and it sucks.

Insurance companies are very pro-hunt for the very reason you bring up. When they're in their rut season they're only thinking about one thing. I never go faster than 35 on the local roads because of that. One night two does went right in front of me followed by a big buck which I would have hit except for the fact that I literally laid on the horn and the brakes causing him to rear up and fall backwards down the steep embankment next to the road. Pretty funny. I screwed up his screwing.

I'm not good enough with a bow to hunt with it but black powder is tricky too. I'm talking about the hand load not the inline stuff.My 50 cal is fun to shoot with the home made bullets.The first shot I took at a deer with it was this year and barely grazed her hardly any blood and 2 pieces of white hair found.When we practice the smoke dosen't bother me seems like hardly any but when you try to see what way a deer ran it seems like it wont go away.I was standing on ground and the deer I didn't shoot ran 10 feet from me before I knew it.My Mossberg 30-06 with 4-12/50mm. scope will help if I get one to come out and play target practice with me.Oh,the fake target was a good sport about being shot just haven't figured out how to cook it yet ha. ha.

I have a friend of mine whose family had 5 deer / car collisions in as many years. And you hardly ever see a buck killed by a car, it's usually a doe.

OK OLD just how many deer can one person shoot where you live or do get tags for the whole family and do all the shooting.
why not just raise one good beef steer and forget all this silly stuff.

NO I'm not against hunting just people who seem to use it to extremes.
But I could be wrong but I don't know where you can hunt and shoot as many as want to.

Any more here in Missouri there is unlimted doe but only one buck per person. but you also have to do it in the 10-8 day seasons. We have so many deer here that its crazy

Hey Walt, In Old's defense, there are so many deer here ( In central MO.) that they are considered a pest. The conservation agent gave me a destroy permit to kill 20 deer, anytime, any method because of crop damage. I can spot light them at night, shoot them out of season, whatever it takes. I killed 9 last year that way.

Every deer killed is one less $2000 car accident. Oh and by the way, I attended the funeral of a 19 year old young man on the day before Christmas eve a few years ago. The vehicle in the other lane hit the deer and it flew through his windshield. His uncle was a minister and had to fly in from Oregon to perform his nephews service.

Havvey,I understand that you have had a bad experience with some unethical people.I won't call them hunters.But i would like to point out the fact that most true hunters are sportsman who care about not only you but,your property and the game on your property.We would never do anything to alienate or hurt a landowner.I have been hunting for over 35 years and have never had a negative moment with anyone during all those years.I take the time not only to get permisson to hunt but,also to get to know the landowner and his family ,hired help and ect.I have volunteered to work on his equipment and even helped harvest crops to be able to have the priviledge of hunting the property.I have watched over property like it was my own because it had no tenants.I have always kept my vehicles off the fields and woodlands and on the roads where they were supposed to be.i've picked up trash and spent shell casing's after dove shoots and other things that i did not even attend just to keep good hunting land.No we are not all trash.Most of us are hard working people who enjoy hunting and the outdoors.We can't stop what the other guys are doing but,we can sure do whats right and keep our word to the landowers who trust us.Only a small percentage of property is available to hunt on now as compared to thirty years ago.But my word is just as good now as it was then.I guess thats why i'm still hunting land i was hunting way back then.And i have friends in my next of the woods who can be trusted also.And unfortunatly we have some around who can't be.Always heard that once a man makes his bed he then has to lay in it.Thats why i've always tried to keep mine soft and warm.

I agree with you whole-heartedly. Can you imagine slaughtering one of your own cattle by shooting it with a bow and letting it run through the woods until it dies?

No thanks. Kill it if you must, but do it swiftly and humanely.

More power to ya, I shoot half a dozen a year myself anyways, I have no idea where people like Walt are coming from with statements like considering it extreme to shoot that many. The cost of those deer you shoot is going to be a lot cheaper per pound of venison then raising a beef steer for yourself instead of selling it. He must also think there should be a one fish limit on bluegill when you go fishing.

Ford sad part is i knew this jerk all my live some of my land is posted. If he plaid his cards right he would have been allowed to hunt on it! He did not even come and talk to me after this just slid off.

Thats another reason they opened up deer season so much. If you get to many deer you get sick deer and that will kill of the deer herd big time. As a matter of fact the number of deer shot on opening week end was down this year from last year. The news said last year by Monday morning 124,000 had been shot this year is was just 100,000

I've seen more deer with poorly located bullet wounds than screwed up archery shots arond here, but I have seen the latter on occasion too.

I'll be blunt about either method, if you don't know where your bullet is going to hit at a certain range, in groups or where your arrow is going to hit at a specified range, you have no business taking a shot by any means. It's the people that say 'eff it, I'll get by or lucky that do this and cause most of these wounded deer. Mind you, no one is perfect and accidents happen, once in 20 years for me, long range rifle shot, never with archery though. You have to be a disciplined hunter and marksman, this is a must, so many people don't take seriously.

It does not take much to establish a known range around ones stand, or be disciplined enough to reasonably judge a short distance when away from the stand. I placed a marker at 20 yards by my stand, and within or at that 20 yards, a shot can be placed that will be effective, after testing accuracy directly from my stand By practicing, and knowing that your arrow will strike where you aim, within or at the range you practice, archery is just as effective, I've seen deer run quite a distance, more than once when the bullet hit the heart. I prefer rifle myself, however, I do archery as well, and when the opportunity presents itself I'll take one, which does not happen often during archery season, too small, too far, wind etc., although I watched a good friend stalk and take a decent buck on a knoll in the field, wind, noise was in his favor, he got within 30 yards and placed a lethal shot, it went 100 yards and dropped. He'll never get one like that again, rare occurance, all I kept thinking was that I hoped his archery skills were sharp, they were, we've both practiced at accuracy, here's where it paid off, watching the arrow released and seeing where it hit, but the whole time I had my fingers crossed when he decided to go after it in the middle of a field that afternoon.

I don't like the people that don't practice and use their bow or rifle enough to be proficient at placing a shot when hunting, yet it happens every year, found a nice 8pt buck last year well over our property line, 1 day into rifle season, gut shot, and they never tracked the obvious blood trail in good weather conditions.

I bought a bow and a gun license and received two buck and three doe tags. Two to three deer works out well for the three of us. I hope my 17 yr old daughter gets at least a good doe this Sat..

Shoot you would be more then welcome but you have to buy your own deer tag and if you don't live in state they cost a fair bit
