Deere 4455?

Hi everyone. First time poster on this site. I'm looking into buying a John Deere 4455. I currently have a '83 5088 International that i'm gonna trade for it. I'm sick of problems the IH has given me. The 4455 i'm looking at is a '91 model. It has 6400 hours and it is very clean and tight. 18.4-42 Firestone radials with matching duals. It has the Quad-range transmission and seems to shift very good. It dynoed 162 horse and is a one-owner. Asking price is 37,500. Is this a fair price? I'm told these 55 series are in high demand and hold their value very well. Can I expect alot more years out of this tractor? I don't really know alot about Deere's. I do like the way this 4455 is built. Looks to be a long life tractor. Thanks in advance,all comments are welcome.

Yes very good tractor. No problem with Q R trans, although the powershifts bring more $. If it came from a good home with reg service it has many more HRS/ YRS of service. Many believe the 55 series were best JD ever made, depends what you want. I like 7000 series personally but they are more $$ again. GOOD LUCK.

Yes they are good, with normal use the engine will go to about 9,000 hrs. before it needs O/H

I currently have three Deere"s with 8800, 9000, 11000 hours- all original engines, transmissions, rear ends-no overhauls. Newest is a 1983 4450MFWD. All PS. You should be able to double those hours before an overhaul. Like the other poster said, many consider the 55 series to be the finest JD built. Good solid machine.

The tractor sounds like a nice one. If its MFWD its not overpriced.TractorHouse has several to look at.The market may have softend some with every thing as it is.Most people prefer the mfwd and they bring about 8K more.

seems kinda high to me. i've got a 1991 4755 ps mfwd, 7200 hrs, good tires overall exc shape, would sell for 45k. the thing with the small frame tractors, the 40xx, 42xx and 44xx is that they will pull more than they will cool in my experience, in other words, if you work the motor to its capability, and it's hot out, it will run hot. just my .02

Yor getting good service out of them, but even though they are running good the thing that kills them is liner cavitation,wich shows up in the 9,000 hour range, around here we O/H them at about that time so it can be done on our terms rather having it happen in the time it's being used and needed..

You just cant get farmers to change coolant. Most think (my dad included) if its green it must still be good. I finally got him to add conditioner on a yearly basis after our late 4020 only made it a few years on a rebuild before it started spitting water out the stack.

I've never had any trouble with heating on our 4250,4440 or 4055. Their all turned up a fair amount. We did have a 4430 that would run pretty warm,but never overheat. I'm sure it's possible,if you turn the tractor way up and it's 100 degrees out. As for the 4455,buy it. We love our 4055,it pulls like a train and is very reliable. Ours has 7950 hours,nothing major ever done yet.

I would definitely consider the 55 series Deere's best ever. Top of the line tractors. All the sound-gard tractors are good machines. The 55 series is the last of the simple tractors. We bought a 4955 new back in '90,it had 11,760 hours when we traded it two years ago. It did a little bit of everything for us and never let us down. It showed no signs of any powershift trouble when we traded it,the motor was getting a little tired but still ran good. We had it turned up to 225 horse back in '96. Great tractors.

Sometimes,we had a 4630 that had that. It had 7000 hours on it. But on the other hand,there was another 4630 that had almost 10,000 hours and was fine. So you never know. As for the 55 series,don't have much seat time personally. Everyone that does seems to love them though. Good luck.

Definitely,at least 9,000 hours with just average maintenance. See alot of 55's go 12,000+ hours before needing anything major done. I personally know of a 4555 MFWD with almost 17,000 hours and has yet to be overhauled,tranny done once at 13,500 hours.

I have a 4455 and a 7800. Bought both new. The 4455 has almost 9200 hours and the 7800 has 6050 hours. From my experience,the 4455 is the better tractor. I've had alot of little things go wrong with the 7800,still like it,but doubt it will be around years from now like the 4455. Just my opinion.

it sounds like a nice tractor to me. price sounds about right,they resale very high. dont worry about the hours if its been maintained and not abused. i love the quad-range transmission. simple and efficient. i dont have a 55 series personally,but our neighbor does,a 4255. he loves the machine. our newest tractor is a 1985 4450 and it is wonderful tractor. not much difference between it and the 4455. gotta love the 4440,50,55 series tractors. good luck on whatever you decide.

Tractor should treat you very good. as long as you're comfortable with the price, thats all that matters! enjoy!
