Deere D vs Case LA

Im looking for another "plow day" tractor. A Case LA is my first choice, but I have a Jehn Deere D near by that needs some work. It does have electric start and lights. Anyway, do any of you have first hand experience with both? I want to know the difference in fuel consumption, driver friendly, and pulling power. I know the bias on here, I feel the same about Case, but if you have honest opinions about the D, let me know. Thanks. Rob

Take the LA, its twice the tractor or more (equivalent in pulling to the JD R)and you know there will be lots of green at your plowing day anyway, add some difference and humble a few Deeres.

i own both tractors the "d" is fine wit 3 bottoms the la will pull 4 fine i prefer the la in plow days has hydraulics for one an just looks better too me. la is a bit harder too find new parts for then the "d", especially engine parts such as pistons an sleeves. the "d" actually makes more power if ran on kerosene as designed then gas but still doesn't compare too the la power.la is more comparable too my john deere "r" in size an power but not infuel comsumption!!! la is very thirsty so is the "d".

Mike 123 I guess you never fed a hopped up jd G 7 gallons per hour, a stock G burned 4 gal./hr. take the LA over there and show them what a real tractor will do.

I would take the LA hands down, would eat the D for lunch! I've seem guys around here with L's and LA's pushing 90+hp with an LP manifold and some head work on gas, D's are what 35hp???? Plus in what it would cost to fix the D you could buy another LA!

buy the D, and then sell it. Then you can buy 5 LA case tractors. this is not really a comparison. apples to oranges...no pun intended.

Hi, well the guy wants $1500.00 for it, the D I mean. It is inside, but I dont know the last time it ran. One of those "dirt is mounded up around the tires" type shed finds. I dont want this to become a a dump on Deere or dump on Case posting. I thank those that answered honestly with experience on both models. I guess I just thought that if the D has 5XX cubes, it should have some steam. I guess not so much. The LA, which is the road I will go I guess, it will also be used around the farm other than plow days. I dont like trailer queens, no matter the color. Tractors are meant to be used, not abused or babied. So, my last question, will the LA be dependable? As opposed to my 410 Case? Other than brakes, nothing has been fixed on that tractor since grandpa bought it new in '56. Thanks to all. Rob

Don't have a LA but do own a 1953 Case 500, and a 1951 John Deere R. Have seen hundreds of antique tractor pulls. Every John Deere D that I've seen has run out of power and was at the bottom of pull results list. Lots of noise and no power. My John Deere R is modified and has far more power than even my 64 horsepower Case 500. However, at an antique plow day, I'll take the purr of the 500 over the putt-putt of a John Deere D or R. My R can be seen at michianatwocylinder.org
