Dewalt lithium Ion Batteries?

My old 18 volt batteries went bad so I bought two brand new very expensive Nano tech Dewalt batteries and I charged them the way the manual says and went to use them one zero degree morning and they only lasted about 30 seconds on my impact. Needless to say I was very dissapointed. I was pretty sure my old batteries worked decent in cold weather. So is this normal or should I take them back? Do these batteries really work any better? A friend of mine who is a contractor just got some and he thinks he really can't tell the difference so far.

I don't know about Lithium Ion batteries but Nickel Metal Hydride batteries do not hold a charge on the shelf. You charge them each time you want to use them.

Maybe the lithium ones are the same way.

I can't comment on their batteries but I've been disappointed by Dewalt more than a few times so I'm not surprised to hear this.

Had the batteries been sitting out in the 0F weather? For how long? Can't expect same performance at 0F as at 72F.

I have several NMH batteries, some of the older ones will not hold a charge, but the newer ones do.

Your charger was probably "killed" by the old, bad batteries and is not functioning.

Bad charger = DEAD new batteries.

had the same problem with my dewalt drill replaced the expensive batt. and still they did not last I broke down and bought a 18V craftsman and it last about a day longer then the dewalt did new

I bought a new charger for the Nano tech. batteries. My old charger can't be used on the new batteries.

It is likely your charger. I have read in their manuals that the lithium ion battery are not compatiable with their older chargers. Not sure if it would damage the battery though.

Dont have any of my own, as I have milwaukees but a subcontractor had some tools with the nano batteries and they seemed to work pretty well. Used their 1/4" impact to put in screws and it did a good job. Even my milwaukees dont like cold weather. If I'm working outside, I'll store them in the pickup or inside a heated building if its available.

Ok. Check out this web page - you were at the way lower end of acceptable use, and you were trying heavy use, too.

Might also look at all the info at all the pages of the batteryuniversity site. Lot of it is technical but there is some really good stuff here.
