Diesel or Gasoline tank differences?

Is there a difference between a tank for a diesel an gasoline engine? I replaced the fuel tank on a 1650 gas with a tank from a diesel. In the winter it's fine. In the hot weather the tank started slobbering fuel out the filler cap. I got a replacement cap that seals well but now the tank builds enough pressure that a seam has ruptured and now leaks. Is there some way of venting the pressure without just venting into the atmosphere? Any other ideas?

Diesel tanks have return pressure line from injector pump and different venting on caps often. Maybe tap small hole in side of filler neck if long enough and insert tube to a hose going to overflow bottle or car type carbon/charcoal emmissions canister?. RN

You might have the wrong cap! The normal cap is vented to the atmosphere, or at least has a pressure valve on it. A cap for an Oliver with auxiliary fender tanks has no vent.
The diesel tank has provisions for a return line, which in your tank has likely been blocked off or plugged.
