A few days ago I mentioned a diesel timing light in a post and generated a couple questions. I didn’t manage to get back to that thread in time, so thought I would respond separately.

There are a selection of pickups that fit on an injector line. One of these is mounted on #1 or 6, preferably at the injector, but will also work on the pump. The box is connected to 12v power, when the engine is running, it will give you a tach readout, and the timing advance can be set for the strobe to match up with TDC.

It also has an induction pickup to mount on 2 cycle detroits to measure RPM only so you can set the governor.

Have you ever compared static timing to the timing light? It seems to me that timing checked with the light will be a few degrees later than static timing.
