Difference Between a NH 56 and 256 rake

Can someone please tell em the difference between the New Holland 56 and 256 rake. They appear to be the same.
What year did the 256 come out?
I presume the 256 was a revamped improved model?
Thanks

If I"m not mistaken, the big difference was the 56 had a straight axle, while the 256 has the angled axle, that follows the angle of baskey. Probably some other chnages as well, but I think thats the major change.

2nd that i have a 55 it has the straight axles and you need to lock the dogs for going down the road, don't think on the 256 you have to do that, is there even dogs on the 256 axles? also i think the rake basket and frame is a bit different and on the 56 than 256.

Isn't 55 straight axle ground drive, 56 straight axle pto drive, 255 angled ground drive and 256 angled pto?

When looking to buy a rake for straw, noticed that the 256 had a much nicer jack stand than the 56. Both were bringing good money, so decided for a few straw bales I could use an older cheaper JD 896A.

The 256 just replaced the 56 rake. There where just running changes such as grease fitting here and there. The 56 never came from the factory with the dolly wheel but the one for a 256 will fit. So a good condition 56 will do the same job as a 256 of the same condition. The parts are mostly the same and readily available.

The yellow frame for the basket on a 256 is rolled where the 56 is angle iron like a 55. I learned that from a jockey friend of mine. You can tell it right off when you look at the rake from the front.
