Difference Between RT ZT Fuel Tanks

I've got a question in that what is the difference between the early RT and ZT series single compartment fuel tanks? I am not asking about the later R fuel tanks like what the ZA/ZB series have. This seeminly is a rolled/formed piece with two end caps welded in place. What I am looking at is an RT parts book with a part number of RT5700 and a ZT parts book with a part number of JT7700A. I cannot tell the difference. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think , think that is, that the ZT may be a little bigger than the RT. Maybe longer? Im not sure. A person doesnt see many of the older ones anymore.

1939-40 R tank is 25 inches long where the Z is 29 inches long.

That is right. I have an RT tank on my '38 ZTU. (All I could find at the time.) Same dimensions-height and width- at the big end as the ZT tank but it leaves a 3 or 4" gap between it and the battery box at the rear or small end.

Do you like having the gap between the tank and the battery box or do you think it looks better with minimal gap? I had a complete battery box and lid made for my "40 ZTU by one of our welding supervisors at one of my previous jobs while in college. My tractor starts just fine by cranking it, but as I get a little bit of age on me (31), I think I might want to put it on along with the rest of the electrical add-on kit.

Well I measured the length of the tank when I got home from work and it is a ZT tank at 29" long. I have notated my parts books as well. Thank you very much for all your time and help in this matter.

I hate to say this, but I may be 31, but by the time I get to go to bed of an evening, I feel 90. I guess that is what a job, a wife, and an 18 month old who loves tractors will do to ya. But I wouldn't trade it for anything, not even a UDLX....haha. Have a great night.

To answer your question, I painted the ZTU in '93. In about '95 I bought a correct ZTU tank and had it sandblasted along with a better hood which I still intend to install it some day.

So I would say I would rather have the correct tank on it.

Truth is the ZTU hasn't been out of the shed since 2000 as far as I can remember.
