Do you have 3 forward gears or 4? Do you have running boards for your feet? There are several other things, but these will tell. 4 speeds are 8N's. There are several other ways to tell also.

Randy, All 8n's have 4 speed transmissions. The late 50 51 and 52 have the side distributor. All 8n's have the smaller bolt pattern on the wheels front and rear. Some had 19 inch front rubber and some had 16 inch front rubber. The 8n has the float setting on the three point, altough I'm not sure if it's on the early ones. 8n ford was built 1947 to 1952. The 9n and 2n are the ones that are hard to tell apart, both have the same features with a 3 speed transmission.no float on the three point and only front distributors. the 9n was built 1939-1942 and the 2n was built 1942-1947. thanks i bought a 8n like i thought and i really like the web site identifying old ford tractors
thanks again to all

In my opinion, not a nickels worth of difference, I don't think that one will do anything the other one cant unless your talking about a race and the 8n will out run a 9n but for all practical purposed my OPINION is that that not as different as people make out

the difference I noticed most
was that the 8n has both brake
pedals next to each on the right
side and the clutch on the left
side.I like that set-up better.
Bob
God Bless
