am thinking about switching from dish to direct.
have had dish for several years, they think they own you after a while.am open for any commets. thanks in advance, & happy thanksgiving!

We used to have direct TV, it sucked cause the signal was for schitt in the poor weather and if snow got on the dish, etc.
We switched to having Charter cable, with phone and internet on the line, underground too. No more weather related TV signal problems.

I think it was 1994 when we started to get directtv. They had every thing in place a few days before the signal was available in this area.

Zero problems with Direct TV , it only goes out in heavy rain.

They told us this when it was installed ,the signal can not go thru water. Never had a problem with snow or anything else. Picture quality has always been perfect.

we switch every two years {better deals} they both have good points and bad but over all we do like direct better because the DVR is better and can do more things with it

We had to get DirecTv when we moved to the farm here in 2000. It was the only thing available then. The rain and also snow causes the signal to die, even when it seems fairly light. I use the local phone co. Fairpoint, for my DSL, because DirecTv is too pricey, and also am not willing to buy their HD tv package.

We switched from Direct to Dish just because Direct didn't carry our local stations and Dish does. We had no complaints about Direct's service.

After we fired Direct they hounded us constantly to try to get us back for at least two years. When they called we'd ask them if they carry our local stations yet. They'd give us the same song every time -"nobutwecangetyouthethreemajornetworks". We'd tell them "we want the three major networks from our local stations only and until you can give us that, don't call us back" GOOD BYE! In a month they'd call us again. It turned us off to them just because of that.

My neighbor a mile away had constant problems with losing the signal when they were on Direct but we never lost it except for heavy rains. Both of us had a clear view of the sky. Go figure!. Jim

We have Direct. We were using an antenna and getting what we wanted that way, but this year the wife wanted to see her NASCAR boys when they went to the sat/cable channels, so we got it. Been in the country for about 8 years now. I like it for the RFD channel, and it's in the CHEAP package. I also like the Discovery and Learning channels too. One thing I don't like though, and I am sure this is the same with Dish, and most "cable" systems, TOO MANY infomercial channels!!! I don't watch them, and I don't want to pay for them!! As for the rain, ice, and snow, most of the time, you can cover the dish with plastic, and it will eliminate the problem. RF will go through plastic, and as long as you keep the dish and antenna clear, the signal will more than likely go through OK. Look at the Dishes mounted on the TALL towers around Railroads, and radio stations as well as the weather RADAR sites. They have the dome over the front of them, which serves two purposes, 1 is to reduce the wind drag at those heights, and another is to keep the dish (reflector) and antenna clear.

The only problem I have with Direct is they hook you in with low price then after the low price intro hang on. It went from 59.00 per month to 92.39 per month with less programing. When I had Dish it was 62.00 per month for almost same programing as Direct. As far as service both where same for me. If I was able to get cable out here in middle of nowhere I would switch to cable. By the way I have one step up from basic programing.

I have comcast basic cable . they have dropped some of my favorite channels and left me with mostly trash tv. thinking about switching to something else . not sure yet . have been experminting with antenna (over the air ) rabbit ears . i can get about 7 local channels not availiable on cable . i am paying more than $750 a year for the cable . $750 would buy a lot of antenna . will probably end up with something other than cable plus antenna . sure do get a clear picture with a new tv and antenna .

I had enough with Dish and their bad service several years ago (and they didn't seem to care), so I switched to Direct. I've been so much happier. It is more cash each month, but the channel selection is much better (I REALLY like the RFD channel, too). They will all be interrupted when the weather gets nasty, but the Direct seems to be aimed better and does it way less. Good customer service. Do it.

On a side note, Dish has been calling since asking to have me back (it has been years, so lie). The last time I told them I wasn't coming back because the service was horrible. He says, "Was it the reception or the customer service?" I just said, "YES" and hung up.

As long as my dsl internet keeps functioning, DTV and the local cable company can have cranial rectal inversion, for all I care!

WHAT is there on DTV that a REAL man needs to watch, anyway???

It's REALLY easy for me to avoid THAT bill!

There both the same, We try to switch every 2 yrs or so. We have Dish now The receiver seems to be better every time we switch and the DVR is much better.

I have had both. They are equal. Each is OK is you are care full with what you do. Both will take you with "free" for a while and then your bill will go through the roof. If you ever get a problem, the old lady on the phone is a real you know what. The sales people when you are buying is sweet as apple pie. One or two channels could be different. There really isn"t much worth watching tho, they (TV)is the only show in town.

We've had both, I don't think one is any different from the other.

We stick with Direct so I can get the NFL package.

I grew up with two channels so I can't complain.

Save yourself the hassle. They are both the same. When I did the switch they screwed me around , saying that I hadn't sent them a part from the receiver. You will save a few bucks the first year, but then the prices are the same.

This is an exerpt from Yahoo's frontpage Naughty or Nice Customer Service. DirecTV was tenth on ther naughty.

"10 DirecTV. The California-based satellite TV firm, which has more than 18.7 million subscribers, has a policy that automatically extends a customer's contract for another 24 months if any new equipment is added. If that policy rubs you the wrong way and you want to cancel your service, the penalty is an early termination fee."

I have Dish and when my receiver failed, they wanted to charge me for the parts. I told 'em that if I did not have a receiver then I did not need their services anymore. They sent me a new receiver, no charge. Can't trust them either.

I've had both and like Direct TV much better.Dish's equipment was junk and they charged to come fix it,Direct TV equipment is good and the one problem I had they came promptly and fixed it at no charge

We've had Direct Tv for years, we even bought a extra dish for the camper. Love it would not change for anything! Excellent customer service. If you do want new equiptment they do want a new contract. Understandable they have money invested. My one son has Dish and is changing because they cut out channels and he pays the same. Just our opinion. Mike

When we sent our dish receiver back, the UPS man said to keep your receipt, dish will charge you for not getting it back up to a year later. He didn't think much of dish's pratices.

You are going to think this is crazy, but it works. The TV is a 42 in LG. The first pic is the back of the TV with a needle inserted in the cable input with a green jumper wire. The second pic is a metal mirror with the other end of the green jumper attached. We get all the local channels with this antenna.

We had to remove our dish antenna to add on to the house. Perhaps we may go back to dish someday when the addition is complete. Not a big fan of direct.

We have Dish tv. It's OK. My in-laws tried Direct but were very unhappy with them so they switched. We had rabbit ears for many years until the switch in broadcasting so had to make a choice. With rabbit ears, we had 4 channels of nothing fit to watch. Now, we have 400 channels of nothing fit to watch! But we do have the off button we use a lot.
Worst part of any satellite tv is when weather is bad and you are watching local station tracking and the receiver looses input. Now you are stuck wondering where the storm is.

I started with dish and switched to direct and between the 2 of them hands down direct is the better one. I found that if you made a deal of some sort with dish you did not get what you should have most of the time and it cost you a lot extra so I unhooked them and went with direct. I'd go back to the antenna set up and do away with both of them if I could get some real programs but now days that does not happen with them going digital

There was a special on the news the other night in reguards to the "B.B".

If you didn't join it "pay them" $400.00 a year you got a "F" rating. The network made up a fictional company that made "nothing" and paid the money and got a "a-" rating.....

So the B.B has become all about money like everyone else.

I never was dumb enough to go to dish, had direct since 97. Two of my brothers switched to dish (or should I say their wives switched them) because it was cheaper. One of them got so fed up with poor service from dish he dropped it altogether and only has antenna TV now.
I'll stick with direct. Only time we ever had a problem, they came out and installed a whole new system, free of charge and gave us 6 months of free Show Time for the trouble that we had with the old system.

We first got Direct TV way back in '97. Our payments were about $30 a month. A couple of months ago I put up the antenna again and we completely ditched the dish when our bill was about $80 a month. Most of the new channels that they added were nothing more than infomercial channels anyway. What really teed us off was that new customers would get the $29.99 a month intro specials, but the loyal customers could not.
Our kids now read books again instead of watching the stupid mindless Disney or cartoon channels.
I miss my Monday Night Football on ESPN (a little), but that $80 a month stays in my pocket instead. There is one show on FX that I really liked that I now watch on Hulu for free. Currently, we have no plans on going back to either Dish or Direct.

ih10020 I must be BORED! i took a tally of all responses and here's results so far: About the same 5 votes- Antenna:3 votes- Dish 2 votes- Direct 14 votes. This is not official in any way, just a bored moron (myself) curious to see peoples opinoin also. Good Luck Mike

Dunno,

I've had DISH since they put up that first bird way back when. Not a lick of trouble in all these years.

One thing I don't understand tho.... How come with 500 channels, I can't find anything good to watch?

Seems like everything is targeted at the 13-year-olds anymore. :>)

Hey George,
I like your setup with the needle.
I have had dish for many years and it is OK. I considered going to Direct when I went to the HD setup because they wouldn't give me any deals because I was an existing customer. They sweetened the deal with three months of Showtime and HBO and were supposed to drop them when the three months were up. I noticed on the bill that they didn't drop it and made an ugly call to get them to remove it and drop the extra charges so you have to watch them. I take a portable dish along with my RV and set it up and have HD on the road. I had trouble setting it up at first because the setup coordinates that the new receiver showed were not correct for the new Turbo three lnb dish. It took about six of those terrible calls to customer service before someone told me that the correct coordinates were not listed and I had to get them from them.

I agree as well, trashed the Local cable when jacked around, then the competition was bought out by the one we could not deal with. No TV lots of better things Like discussing it with you. Jim

That's the way to do it, change every 2 years. Then you get the newbie discounts and promotions the long time customers never get. Had Direct since '96, it worked. Went to Dish last year to get the newbie deals. It was about $30 a month cheaper than Direct. When this 2 year contract runs out, I'll see what Direct is offering.

Other thing I found is to go directly to the supplier and bypass all the resellers you see running ads everywhere. I got stuff from Dish that the resellers couldn't match.

I originally had Comcast, but due to disatisfaction went to Direct. Because of poor programming choices and cost chose to do away with all/any cable. Because of my location I need a 30 ft. antenna for reg. tv reception, didn"t go with that option either. It"s now six months with no TV or Cable and don"t miss any of it!! I can read the paper for news and get any other info from internet via my laptop which goes everywhere I go.

I have Direct TV. I will be going to Dish when my contract is up.

Everything was fine for two months. Then I started getting charged for the Premier package. Which I had never ordered. They told me I had ordered it. No I did not,so then they told me my wife had ordered it. Told them I don't think so,wife has been dead five years. Then they said my kid ordered it. Don't have any kids at home.

Then I was told in order to get rid of it. I will have to pay my bill in full. So I had to pay 225.00 dollars to get rid of something I never ordered.
