I have a 3010 john deere gas tractor. it has a very rusty gas tank on the inside. it sat outside without a cap for about a year, and i am wondering if anybody has anyideas about how to get the rust and other junk out. I tried to rinse it out with some gas, did that about five times, and i am still getting brown gas with some chunks of rust getting to my carb. I put a fuel filter in yesterday, and that helped keep the big chunks out but i am still getting very brown gas.

Had the same problem with my gas tank. Took it off and went to town with it. Had it bead blaster on the inside and out. Then bought a product that coats the inside of the tank...can't remember the name of it. But it worked great. Like having a brand new tank again.

Take it to the radiator shop or do it youself.Put nuts and bolts or a piece of chain in there and shake it and shake it some more. Then you etch it with acid and give it the shake treatment agin, When it is finally clean you treat it ith any number of gas tank sealers avilable that coat the inside. Be sure to protect the fitting and the lid and mouth so you don't seal that up. If you just clean it and don't seal it , it will just rust again.

Go to www.por15.com. They have a tank liner kit that has worked very well for me on 4 tractors. You first have to get the rust out then follow their directions.

Not sure, my buddy is a heavy duty mechanic, so all it cost me was a 6 pack. You could try phoning a auto body shop.

buy a fuel tank restoration kit (about $30 or $40) and do the work yourself. You can get these kits from Eastwood or J.C. Whitney. Let me explain the kit for a second. It includes the following:

1.

Phosphoric Acid (the same stuff that’s in naval jelly that eats rust off your barbeque grill)
2.

Acetone (etches the inside of the tank after the acid bath, in preparation for the tank coating)
3.

Tank Coating (coats the inside of the tank and seals it against further corrosion)

do as ohers have said and then befroee you put the filter bowl back in take a piece of stainless steel that has a very vine mesh to it and roll it up like you would a cigerette. let the end stick up into the gas tank an inch and a half and stick the other end down in the shut off valve. crimp the end shut thats up in the tank and you want have to worry about any piece getting in it for several years in caase you miss getting all of it out. i've read here that some guys jack up thier tractor and tie the gas tank to the wheel and let it run with chains and other pieces of metal in it to beat the rust out. thats not safe. if your going to do that just drive the tractor around

Article's about midway down on the page.

I've heard MEK's (methyl ethyl ketone)a good liner, since you can dissolve it once the tank starts to rust again.

Good luck!

Electrolysis would be an easy way to get the rust out. Put an iron rod inside the tank without it touching anywhere and fill the tank with water/mixed with borax and apply 12 volts for several hours and then rinse well and dry with alcohol. Make sure the negative side is the tank and positive side is the rod.
