Disc width

How big of a disc can I pull with a Case 1370 (150 HP)? I used to pull a 6 footer with my smaller Ford 3000 and Massey 35 but came across the Case last year. Is 10 HP per foot a reliable measure. Thanks.

Brian: There are such vast differences in disks, one should talk in number of disk blades, size of blades, blade spacing and pounds per blade. Generally speaking an 18" blade requires 1.25 hp per blade in standard wheel controlled disks.

There are guys that pull a lot more, but the wear factor makes a huge difference. An 18" blade worn down to 16" does not equal a 16" blade, most of the concave is gone.

That Case should be able to easily handle a 16 footer, and if you install a set of dual rear tires, you can probably go up to an 18 footer, maybe even a 20 footer. It also depends on what you are going to be disking, how deep you want to go, what type of soil, etc. The sizes I mentioned would be typical of what would be used in average Iowa soils.

That's a pretty gutless Case if you can't do any better than that. I pull a 20 in plowed ground with my 135 horse White and it doesn't even act like it's back there. 22-24 foot with 150 horse isn't streaching it one bit if you're getting the power to the ground.

In my area a 1370 Case would play with a 21 ft disk.My 160 horse 2390 Case never even knew my Krause model 1904 21 ft disk was back there.My 1206 IH's even pulled it at 6 mph.

A disk needs about 6-7 horsepower per ft in my area.A chisel needs 10 horsepower per ft.It all depends on your soil type.

In gumbo, a 10 foot chisel will give a 200 horse tractor with MFWD all it wants if you put it in the ground.

I poked in 10000 horsepower and it says I can pull 1433 feet of disk.

Now, I can only wonder the weight of the tractor, which is equally as important as horsepower.

I can pull a 20 ft. disc with my 806 diesel, but it works it in the hills and plowed ground, don't know how many horse I am putting out with it, probably 100-110? That was last spring, since then I have overhauled it with 1206 pistons, rebuilt injectors, so it might run a little harder now. I just bought a 5288 and I would like to find a 24-25 ft. disc for that.

John Deere recommends 5-10 HP per foot of working width for their 637 regular tandem, rigid, pull behind disc moving at 4-6 mph. My experience shows 10 HP per foot to be more than enough. With 10 HP per foot I can pull a springtooth drag behind the disc and do about 5 mph. Plenty fast because any faster would throw dirt away from the front gangs that the rears wouldn't be able to reach. I use a tandem disc with 22" notched blades front and rear.
