dishwasher problem???

Hey folks,
Do household dishwashers sold in the states heat their own water or do they work off a hot water supply?

we have a siemens brand that just stopped working from one day to the next.

It starts and puts a little water in but then just sets and runs itself thru the timer until finished without any other operation. Gotta pull it out and check things after work but don't really know what to check for. Guess the problem can be answered as generic to a dishwasher and not really brand specific.
Any tips on what to check for would be appreciated. All I know so far is that it gets some water in enough to stand a little in the bottom and only pumps it out when you push the button combo to reset.

Thanks,

Dave

dave2: The dishwashers here use hot water from the water heater, however they also have a button where you can have the heat the domestic hot water even more. As far as the other problem it sounds like some type of timer problem. Don't know much about dishwashers. But maybe try google dishwasher problems. Hope this helps. Good Luck

Thanks! Wife found a bunch of stuff that she says describes her problem. All in German tho with no pics. I can handle the technical language OK if I have at least a picture reference or two. As it is, she'll have to stand over my shoulder and translate  I swear Jeff Foxworthy knew her personally and used her for a lot of his material........

Many things to look at, but if it does not fill enough water, it probably has lockouts to prevent burning out a dry heater or pump. Water level sensor, etc.

(quoted from post at 08:30:30 08/09/11) Dishwasher??? I always thought that was what a wife was for. Saves a lot of $$ to boot.

She don't drink so loding the dishwasher is out of the question........

She just sent me an email that she got home and pushed the button and everything is working. Just had a real bad thunderboomer go thru. Bet I go home and find my alarm clock flashing because the power went off. The dishwasher is electronic and may have needed a jolt. I'llpost the end result later.

before you pull it out ,look inside and see if it has a float, generally above where the water inlet valve is.make sure this will move up and down freely.,all service on most can be done from the front.unplug it from wall ,remove kick panel, take a screwdriver and see if motor will turn .also look for leaking seals on pump.

Hello dave2,
If the washer has a mechanical timer, that would be the first thing to check. Contacts get cruddy and will work on and off.
Thats my guess.

this was at 0600 this morning and We needed to get to work. Was real nasty and smelly cause it was full of dishes to be washed. She poured a cup or so of bleach in the bottom so it would smell better for her to empty and have ready for me to check when I came home. She pushed the button when she came home just to check and it worked like a charm...... Bleach must have disolved some fat that was causing a problem????

Anyway, it's running thru a cleaning cycle now.

As JackinOK said the water level on any machines is controlled by a float, usually in front left. crud can build up under the float leading to over fill, and/or on the rod that connects to the switch below, leading to underfill. the bleach could free it up temporarily.

Dave, I'll loan you our golden retreiver to get those dishes washed till you get that thing fixed. He does an excellent job QUICKLY!
