Distributor grease

I use whatever is sitting there. I think the last set of points I put in 10 years ago or so I just used a dab of Lucas Hi Temp red grease. Rght or wrong, I dont think Ive ever had any issues with the points wearing because of the "wrong" grease.
I agree, something is far better than NOTHING!

I too just squirt out a tiny dab of red grease from the grease gun on my finger and wipe it all the way around on the cam.

My tractor has never had a problem, but my father's '74 chevy pickup with a 350 did develop a problem with the points cam wearing down so badly that it would no longer run because it didn't open the points enough. This might have been from neglect to put grease on it rather than from using "wrong" grease. He eventually swapped out the distributor for an HEI type.

No steel is going to wear before the fiber points rubbing block. The grease was to lubricate the fiber rubbing block and reduce wear. That is why every set of points used to come with a tiny vial of grease.
NAPA sells Echlin points grease. Summit Racing sells points grease, @ $11 for .8 oz it's expensive, but I used to apply it with a toothpick so little is required.
The use directions used to state, put a small dot of grease evenly on the backside of the rubbing block to reduce wear.
Old points on left, new on right showing fiber block wear.

Last time I had to buy any, a tube goes forever, NAPA no longer carried it, they sub moly grease or dielectric. My O’Reilly can have the SL-2 in a couple of days and they can get Blue Streak ignition parts too. Summit Racing also stocks it and Blue Streak
Yep, a tube lasts forever- I still have the tube from J.C. Whitney that I bought in 1974, still about half full. Little dab'll do ya. It lives in the little drawer with my point files, ignition wrenches, feeler guages, internal clamping screwdrivers, distributor wrenches etc. I even use it on my 427 Ford dual point distributors, that are fairly valuable

Those points don't have the good old phenolic/fiber rub blocks, they both have (inferior) modern el cheapo plastic rub blocks that wear poorly and melt easily.
