Hey guys, can anyone tell me what years Dodge put the 383 and the 440 in their pickups? When did they quit those engines? Could you get them in a Warlock? Thanks for the info.

The first and last year for the 383 was 1958 and 1971. It was replaced by the 400 and lasted until 1977. The first 440s were built in 1966 replacing the 413 and 426 and they also ended in 1977. There were a few engines available in early 1978, mainly in motorhomes. When they were first put in pickups I am not sure. The above dates are for engine production. The 350 was only built in 1957 and the 361 was dropped before the 383 I believe.

Boy, everything you asked about are sure getting hard to find. From 16 until I was 26 all I ever had were 70's dodge short box power wagons, well I did have a couple of the ramchargers with the removable top. Although the big blocks were awesome motors, my favorite drivetrain combo was a 318 2 barrel, 4sp man ual with the granny low, and 3.96 gears turning 32x11.5 general mt's. My chevy and ford buddies were always amazed what them truck could do. Wish I could find one now.

Boss has a 79 motorhome with a 440 and if you look for parts for it at local car parts stores you ask for 78 pickup truck.

1964 was the first year Dodge put big-blocks in the pickup trucks with the 426 cube motor in 1/2 and 3/4 tons - 365 max. horse and 465 max. torque.
Those figures were measured different and reflect gross, not net.

1967 was the first year the 383 got used in the trucks with 258 horse and 323 pound-feet of max torque.

1972 was the first year for the 360s and 400s in trucks.

1974 was the first year for the 440 in trucks.

1978 was the first an only year when the Misubishi six-cylinder diesel was offered in 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks.

1979 - no big blocks in trucks - 360 largest engine offered.

Chrysler cars had a 392 hemi in 1957 with fuel-injection in 1958. 383 and 413 was offered in 1959. 440 in 1966.

A friend of mine collects big-block Mopars and gets many for free from junked motorhomes. Around here - big motorhomes die early since snow sits on them in the winter and ruins them. He finds a lot of 440s in years newer what was in cars and trucks - I suppose motorthome builders used left-over inventory.

The last 440 that I had was in 1986 Dodge chassy Motorhome the first was in a 1968 Chrysler New Yorker. Both were great engines.

My first 383 was in a 1961 Dodge that was my first real powerful car that thing would move.

If you have the truck and a moter and transmission (big block MOPAR and small block take different transmissions)mounts are available in the aftermarket. Mopar Muscle or Mopar Action magazines are good places to look for adds.
