Early style stalk chopper.
As in corn stalk.

yes I do, when I was a kid , my dad had one of these, we called it a corn stalk cutter. it will work to chop corn stalks or does a fair job of chopping weeds, in order to transport you flip the tong over and pull it on the slides that are up now

That one appears to be made to pull behind a tractor. Earlier ones were one-row with a cover over the blades and a seat.....to be pulled with a team of mules or horses. I remember my Dad telling me that they were really hard on a team because the resulting shock as each blade hit the ground was transmitted to the animal's collar.

Stalk cutter. There in S. Texas it was probably used to cut cotton stalks which are very tough. Borrowed one once to use on cotton after th one row mule drawn one wore out. Rough on tractor hitch. We never chopped the corn stalks on the small corn patch we grew for the livestock.

Can it be used to do anything else. Maybe cultivate a field after it has been disked to loosen the dirt? JLH

Think it would pack down more than it would loosen. That's my recollection from the cotton patch anyway.

Grandad had one when I was a kid. Chained a rubber tire between the drawbar and the hitch on the cutter to lessen some of the shock. Would tear the tire apart after a day or 2. He pulled it with a Allis chalmers C and used it on set aside acres. Chris

In Illinois it was a corn stalk chopper, did fine with the right speed, to fast and it was hard to stay in the tractor seat, to slow and it wouldn't rotate and drag a pile.

Stalk cutter, used to cut cotton stalks in Mississippi. Old timers used pull type and those mounted on 3pt.

Most tobacco stalk cutters that I have ever seen were taller or had a larger circumference and were much heavier. They can be horse drawn, 3 point, and many were made to mount under the belly of the offset Farmalls. I have seen one mounted to the front of a Ferguson. They would sling the tobacco pieces all over and make a gummy mess on a tractor.

We called it a 2 row corn stock chopper. I spent many hrs. on one just like it. We pulled a seven ft. tandem disk behind it. We always tried to do it when the stalks were dry, or cold enough to freeze dry the stalks.

My brother and I would have a contest --he would watch 1 row, and I got the other. If his side chopped a ear of corn that was dropped at harvest, he got a point, and I got the other if my side hit a ear.

OK you smart A$$e$. I had no life at the time, as I wasn't dating at age 9 or 10.

YET...it was probably more of a life than I actualy have now!!! You all noticed I'm on the puter alot these evenings??
