Drawbacks with a 930 CASE

There are a couple of weaknesses in a 930, none major: 1. do not let them get too hot, they crack heads easily. 2. do not run low on tranny fluid, the reverser gear will seize up. 3 the brakes are only fair. Otherwise they are solid as you can find, very good tractor.

6-speed chain drive and 8-speed gear drive. Both very tough, in fact, nearly bullet-proof.
I've heard several people say that these tractors were bad to crack heads. BULL BUTTER! I've been around these 30 series tractors all my life and count all the cracked heads on one hand, and I've got two fingers on that hand cut off! We NEVER had a cracked head on our tractors. Sure, as with any engine, if you're out there working the dog out of it and shut it off without cool-down time, you can expect some problems if you keep rolling those dice. I don't think anyone in the world worked a tractor as hard as my grandpa did, and he never cracked a head on one. BUT, he ALWAYS cooled them down for about 5 minutes mid-to-high idle before shutting them down. We all knew that needed to be done.
Back to the tranny - The transmissions on the 1966 1030 was not as good due to it not having the cooler on that first year of production. Those with cooler kits, factory 1967 and later on the 1030, were fine. Virtually the same transmission in the 930, but it would handle the lower power of the 930 engine.
The brake problem on these tractors was easily solved with expansion balls 1/16 inch larger than the factory balls. Install them and you have good brakes for 20 plus years.
Excellent, economical, tough tractors.

Bet cold water was added to those engines that cracked heads in most cases.Sure was not a problem on 830 or 930 we had.

man ,you hit it on the head , about being ashamed of the 4020 P/$H$$T MONEY PIT ,,, developed a leak on the front hydraulic pump of this fuel guzzler , REAL SUNDAVICH to find , can't seeit , can't get to it 'cant get a wrench on it withouttearing the whole front half off back to fan waterpump ,, or REMOVE FRONT AXLE AND CRIB UP AND LAY UNDERNEATH IT WITH ALL THAT FILTH DRIPPING ALL OVER YOU.. . because the fuel tank must be removed on a 4020 jd,if working from the top to make repairs to the pump . the only way to RUN test is to set a can on the floor station and siphon to fuel pump....jd, does the goofiest engineering , and uses more fuel, while delivering less work... CASE IS ALWAYS simple and straight forward ,,. Oliver and Alice are 2 .....

Hey fellows thanks for the excellent information on the 930 .My first exposeure to JICase was likely the LA Dad had that caught the corner of the implement shed during startup with little damage. We also had a VAC and S on hay baling duty. There were then several 500's on loader duty around the yard.My brother had a couple of Crossmounts in the 1970's.I had a V Case until last year. How about your exposeure to JI Case.
