[Novice with Case]

Hello gang,
Just bought a new toy and need some expert advice. I have a track tensioner leaking badly past the seals. I see no appartent way to access the part to replace the seals. It appears the only way in would be to remove the track to and front idler to make what should be a pretty simple repair. Seems there must be a better way I just am not seeing it. Any advice from the experts would be greatly appreciated!

How are you going to put the seal in unless you pull the track tensioner apart? The idler has to removed to give you enough room to pull it apart. Kind of like replacing seals in a hyd. cylinder. Just make sure to loosen off any tension before you start taking it apart.

I understand about the idler but on my Komatsu DP41 the guards can be unbolted and removed in sections to reach the top of the tensioner. It appears on Dresser the guard is welded in place the full length of the track. In essence it looks like you will be working down through the opening on the end after the idler is removed to access. If this is the case how would you replace the tensioner if it is too badly worn to repair?

You better get a service book so you know what you're looking at. You have to know what NOT to unscrew. The recoil spring, with some manufacturers, is under compression even with the cylinder bled off. The seals can be changed without messing with the spring, but just be careful. If you see parts opening up as you unscrew them, STOP! Call someone with TD-20C knowledge and get their advice. Never worked on a TD-20C, but I think that unless the wishbone unbolts from the front idler and the piston, the track will have to be broken and the idler rolled forward.

Welcome to the Forums.

I suggest you start a new thread of your own and describe your machine and the issue. Many look at an old post like this (12 years old) and just pass on by it. Everyone is more likely to read a new post/thread. Ray last posted in November of 2012, I think jm. is more likely the fellow who can help you and he is still around.
