Dresser TD20C

Do any of you guys know if the undercarrage components from an IH TD20 built in the mid-60s will interchange with the Dresser TD20C built in 1974? The machines look indentical in terms of undercarrage. The only difference I see externally is the IH has the big inline 6 motor and the newer Dresser has the large IH V8 motor. I ran across the older TD20 salvage machine with a practically new undercarrage Might buy it if they are the same

Thanks! As my title indicates I am a Novice in many areas and even though I am 59 years old I learn something new each day. I have heard the term pitch in reference to sprockets, rails, etc, but do not know exactly what that means. If the sprockets were swapped would this allow the parts to interchange? Sorry if the sound dumb but you never know if you do not ask.

I am not sure then you could fit the old TD20 sprocket on 20C and if the chaine could run on the idler too you better find a set chaine with pads from CATERPILLAR D7E it should fit on

As you have been told the td 20B track chain is not the same pitch as the td 29 C . Also the mounting boldts on your td 20 c strocket are diffrent.. You will be luck if you can keep the v8 running long enough to need undercariage. when they are running they are a work horse but prone to comming apart.

Interesting comments about the V8. I understood the later models had a Cummings engine that was prone to problems but had not seen anything negative on the V8 IH motors. Thanks for the information on the older TD20 versus the later TD20C undercarrage. I understand if the parts will not bolt up that is the end of the story. I assume from you guys you are not big fans of IH or Dresser machines. Correct? In a bigger machine what would be your choice??

Hello Novice,
Chain pitch as mentioned is the distance between pins of the chain (rail). Sometimes with severe wear in the pins and bushings it can be hard to determine.
The TD20B and early 20C both had 7.5'' pitch. Severe service B's and early C's had 8.5'' pitch as did late C's.
You need to measure your chains (rails) and sprocket hardware and compare with the set you are looking at. Link count could also be an issue. Over the years you really don't know what has been done to either machine. You never know.

Thanks to all who responded to my questions. This is what I like about the YT forums. I have owned and repaired most every brand of tractor over a lifetime of being around my Dad who dealt in farm equipment. I feel pretty comfortable with most repairs on tractors but dozers are new to me. I never log on to this forum without learning something new. I now understand the term "pitch" in reference to the rails and how this relates to interchanging between models.
