Drill Doctor Problems

I just bought a X500 Drill Doctor. I read the instruction manual and watched the DVD. The first day I used it, it worked great. Now when I sharpen a drill bit, it leaves the cutting edge lower than the rest of the bit. To put it another way it leaves a hump behind the cutting edge. I have tried everything with no sucess. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Mike, I had the same thing happen to me a few times. I carefully realigned the drill bit between the two metal fingers in the alignment fixture, taking care to make sure the drill was rotated to the centered position. It seemed to fix the problem. You might try rotating the drill very slightly clockwise (as I recall)in the alignment fixture before locking it and see what happens. I think this put a bit more hook on the drill bit. Sharpen the bit slowly....

In other words be sure your lining up the index marks probably. It sounds like you slipped somewhere.

The locking collar will twist the bit when you tighten it, this causes the problem you have. It is more prevalent on smaller bits. Just make sure it stays put when tightening and sharpen again a time or two to make the bit right again.

While you guys are fooling around trying to get a dd to work I will have sharpened my drill on my belt sander using my drill point gage to get it right. Quick touch up with a fine stone to get the grind marks out and I am drilling. And haven't spent more than a few dollars for my gage, and a sanding belt which I use for a lot more than drill sharpening. There is a reason a real drill sharpening rug costs somewhere around a grand min. and a drill doctor one or two hundred. You get what you pay for.
