DRILLING VS. ROW PLANTING

I have done both and like I've said before I drilled in 6" rows which puts a bean about every 4".Now when you combine and the beans are short the sickle will bend the stem over before it cuts it because the next bean is not there to push against. Works fine if you know all your beans will be tall.

my personal opinion is that rows anywhere between 15 to 30 inches are fine for beans, more seeds closer to each other help each other emerge if the ground crusts, 30 is nice for later spraying

I plant my beans on 30" rows, this works well in decent ground and better in bottom ground as the beans form a nice plant with plenty of canopy. However, on some poorer ground with lots of clay, the beans do not form such a canopy. This means I spray that ground twice as oppossed to once. I also I'm guessing allows moisture to escape faster. So based on this I have been purusing to find a double disc end wheel drill to sow wheat with and test my bean theory.

what do you have now planter or drill? i would simply use what you have as it will not really make much difference. i have planted in 30" 15" and 7.5" and really not much different in yields in smae years. Combining i like drilled as they feed more even otherwise Use what you have and don't worry about it. i have notilled minimun tilled and did complet plow fad really not much difference. what you need to get in any application is a good stand even emergence and luck in weather. as of today i still drill beans notilll into standing stalks or hay ground. ususlly get mid 50 average. One trip and one spray and done. after this spring drill will be for sale as rest of farm I got enrolled in 10 year program. nwe rate issued i can't net that farming it and shop work generates more income anyway. good luck.

we have done it both ways and have had good crops both ways but population control depth control and spaceing is difficult at best with a drill. the planter is much better. we have a jd 1790 15-30" and a jd 455 drill

We have a JD 7100 set on 30's but my partner just came home with an JD 8100. It's only got single disk opener but is in great shape and we kind of wanted to play with his new toy but have never drilled beans before.
