Driveway weed spray difficulties

sprayed the driveway a couple months ago with roundup and a broadleaf spray combined with both mixed on the heavy side of the instructions. had a good kill and since i did it with a hand sprayer I naturally missed a few spots so a couple weeks later sprayed what i missed.

no one lives there and the light traffic from when we are there and the few AirBnB guests we have its not enough to keep the grass at bay. and grandma before she went to the nursing home wasn't driving and when she did it wasn't often so since grandpa stopped farming the grass/weeds had really taken over the drives. Not going to do anything with the drives up to the barn (hay mow and milk house) as we don't need to worry about those. they do brown up when it gets really dry.

now it almost looks like i Never sprayed it. we've had good grass weather (warm and rainy) but this seems a bit odd. the fields still look brown from their round up application (scorched earth)

trying to get a good kill so i can scrap the sod off and lay some new stone.

any suggestions on what went wrong? both were post mix concentrate and neither were very old. it was not "farm supply" roundup.

thanks.

What you are seeing now is probably not the same plants you killed. New growth from newly sprouted seeds would be my guess. I'd select one of several 'total kill and preventer' options. Ortho 'groundclear' is one, RM43 is another.. Lots more available.

I suspected that. so the farm next door probably sprayed "per-emergance" as well???

need to get some stone (asphalt regrind??) down when i can get it killed again.

Public works and road contractors use a weed burner and follow up with crack sealer on asphalt cracks on streets. Concrete contractors and road contractors use a concrete sealer after cutting expansion joints. Either type is available in caulking gun tubes at your favorite lumber yard.

Ground packed to tight for the weed killer to get down to root of the problem so to speak.

Why not just remove the sod as you plan and treat it once it's up. If it is as hot and dry there as it is here. The sun will kill the roots in no time.

I would try Pramitol. It has to be sprayed just before a rain. It will kill the weeds and as it soaks down into the ground itwill stop regrowth. I have better results with this rather than glysophate but it still does not last the whole year for me. Mark.
A mixture of a gallon of white vinegar, a cup of epsom salt, and a tablespoon of blue dish detergent is an effective weed killer but it has the same limitation as roundup. It is a CONTACT killer. Won't kill seeds or sprouts that haven't breached the surface.

How about salting the whole thing? Seems like it would keep the weeds away for quite some time.

Obviously you've never been to New York State.

The biggest problem with salt is RAIN, though. Water dilutes it and washes it away. There's no rain on the Dead Sea.
I have been to NY, PA puts salt on in a similar fashion. You're right though about the dilution. It's why the salt they do apply isn't enough to make stuff not grow.

It only kills the green stuff above ground.
Then as the initial growth was killed off, it exposes the ground to sunlight. Which triggers more seeds to sprout.
You might have to re-spray several times, killing each new growth off before it goes to seed.

Farmer's field might stay dead because he is only combating what has blown in over the winter and what weed seeds have been tilled up to get enough warmth from the sun to sprout.
Eventually he will have all the buried too deep weed seeds killed off as long as he does not let any go to seed again.

I suspect you did get a good kill of the existing weeds. Next time try to lay on the new stones shortly after the weeds die. Maybe lay down some weed stop fabric before the new stone to reduce weed growth.

I previously made a reply- but what I re-read in my post is gibberish. So, let me try again. You need to spray Pramitol. It has to be sprayed before a soaking rain. It will kill existing weeds and then soaks into the earth and prevents regrowth/new growth. HOWEVER- my results are about 50/50. It does not last the entire summer for me, but it is better than spraying round up/glysophate every week or 2. You are generally killing existing weeds and grass, but the new growth is from seeds. ALWAYS spray to kill before the undesired plant goes to seed. These seeds seem to last forever, so it's an uphill battle. Pramitol is a little tricky to use, you may want to consult with your extension agent in your county. Read the label carefully-it seems like a heavy concentration to me, but it can be effective. Mark.
