early case 580k backhoe power shuttle

my early model 580 k backhoe does not want to move foreward when cold. Reverse seems to work ok. After it warms up it works pretty good. Seems like the problem started after i changed the hydraulic filter, but maybe just a coinsedence. What is wrong?

most of the time the problem you describe means the shuttle clutches are worn forward is usually the first to go as these are used more than reverse under heavy load am assuming you changed oil at the same time old oil could have small metals in it allowing shuttle to seem ok,also I will guess shuttle pressure is still holding 190psi or in the green range on a original gauage hope this helps Tom

Jerill, Did you drop the little pan on the power shuttle and clean the suction screen? That is easy and would tell you if there is a mechanical problem developing. The main Hydraulic filter has nothing to do with the drive so that is not an issue. Thoroughly clean the screen in the PS pan, resilicone it and put it back up, no gasket required. Fill it and keep adding Hytran Ultra till the level stabilizes on full after a period of running, maybe several minutes. If you want you can drain the TC by turning the engine and finding the 7/16 plug up through the hole in the bell housing removing it and allowing it to drain out. As the other poster said fwd clutch is the first to fail, usually becqause of a broken belleville spring which applies the pac when the piston depresses it but thatg should not explain the shuttle working after warm up. Let us know how you make out. mEl

I agree mEl the working after warm up got me too
usually the other way around sounds like you have
been around these and worked on them as long as I
have thanks for the good advise

Yeah Tom, I wish I had a dollar for everyone I have dropped gone through and reinstalled, You get to know the tricks after while. Pretty trouble free units and the kits and parts from Case will also do the 310 Deeres that use the same shuttle, the reverse plates are brass vs fibre for the deeres but Case's fit and work well, the pumps are the same but used the new JD converter, Incidently the case converter is 1/3 the price of Deere although the Case is reman. Another thing that comes to mind as I write is that if the rotary valve external lever stops wear so the rotary valve overtravels that can stop fwd from engaging properly, I have built up many stop areas on the external lever and reground them to stop the rotation of the spool at detent, the reason I do the cams is that the PS housing gets beat out where the lever stops hit and a new lever will not stop the spool at detent. When this is the problem the shuttle will not drive in full engaged position but will if pulled back toward neutral, something to keep in mind. mEl

Phase 3 has the shifter for the 4 speed up in the right hand console. The first had it coming out of the floor by the bottom of the right console. mEl

hi
i bought a case 580k which has 9000 hrs on it. i started doing some much needed maintenance. changed trans/hydraulic cooler in front, replaced all seals on 4 hydraulic cylinders.
i took out bottom drain plug on torque converter housing and quite a bit of oil came out. i don't think there is supposed to be oil in the housing. do anyone know what might be leaking. it is a phase 3,4way shifter is on console to right of seat

If the large hole in the bell housing was plugged it should not have been. Leave it out and run it, if you leak oil out that hole you have a seal problem on the front pump or its gasket. there should also be brass washers on thr four pump mounting bolts. Let us know if you have a bad leak. mEl
