I am considering upgrading combines a bit, going from my current late model JD 4400 to an early model Case IH 1460. The 1460 does not have the electric over hydraulic header control that everyone seems to recommend. How big of a deal is this? it seems like the price on these models is nearly 50% less than the electric over hydraulic control models. I am looking to cover about 250-300 acres per year. The 1460 has a 17.5 foot 1020 head with it.
my current 4400 is a machine that I really love. It is a great machine that I really like, but capacity is really low, especially in corn. In beans it seams fine. Also, I currently adjust my header height manually with the 4400. My 4400 has the auto header height control, but it just seems so sensitive and it is constantly adjusting, this drives me nuts! I really have no problem adjusting the header height manually and have been doing it for 2 years without a problem. I hear great things about the rotary combines and am trying to work myself that direction.
Will I be disappointed with an early model 1460 without the sought after electric over hydraulic controls? Does a 1460 have a rock trap?
