ehaust pipe

Anyone want to comment your opinion of changing my 8N to a straight exhaust pipe, vertical, right off the manifold? My underside muffler has seen better days, and thinking I would enjoy hearing this powerhouse cackle a little as I mow, but don't want to replace my ears the first summer, is it too loud, or tolerable? The parts store here has what I need.

About the only reason I can think of for a vertical exhaust is if you are doing a lot of hay cutting & don't want to risk a fire under the tractor. Other than that, a vertical exhaust is going to get more fumes in your face & will act like a magnet for every low hanging tree branch w/in 5 miles.

It is simpler and cheaper. I would agree with Bruce in that it will find branches to snag. The fumes have never been a problem with our Cub...the same for the MM Jetstar 3...both with vertical exhaust. Yes, there are times when the wind puts it in your face, but not a big deal, IMHO. It will last longer up there, but don't forget the coffee can or pipe flapper!

FYI...we're in the NE corner of OH and have the same parts, but usually cheaper.

-IF- you do go verticle, put an angled deflector on it to get the exhaust away from your face.. and/or a flap cap to keep rain out.

some people I have seen go with a horizontal setup instead of vertical and put the ehaust out to the front and side. with a flair on the pipe as well.

Only go to a straightpipe if you are in a wide open area. I have a 600 with a vertical pipe, an the time I swapped it for my 8N in the woods, even though I was careful, I still got smacked in the face, sooner or later you"re looking back at you implement and Pow! right on the kisser.

Someday when you need hearing aids to hear a little of your grand children's voices, you will wish you hadn't.

we run a straight pipe on our deere 3020 diesel. It's angled away from the operator. I think it's tolerable for the operator. I recently taught my father how to drive the tractor and we only had to raise our voices a little to be heard over the noise.
However, i almost never run the tractor over about 1800 rpm. I don't need to. 8-speed tranny, 72 horsepower. Just don't need the extra 900 rpm. Only times we run it over 1800 rpm is when baling hay (I put the muffler back on) or when driving it from one place to another on the road (I wanna make people look at the tractor. The noise is a draw).
