I am making a simple front snowplow setup for my 9N. I plan to use a winch to raiseand lower. I am looking for a little winch like used on ATV"s. I of course can't find anything 6 volt. a 12 volt will work OK won't it? Or am I going to need something to step up the voltage to the winch?

No more pull than the lift would have ya might concider just mounting a 12v battery and just rechare it. Sorta a jerry rig but would think would work.

Sure.

Depending on the design of the winch, it will operate at half speed until it burns up. If that's what you mean by "work ok".

Yes. It's called a 12v conversion.

W/ a front coil, I'd be very concerned about coil overheating w/ a 12v battery in it unless you put a resistor in the ignition circuit.

Which would need to be bypassed when you put the 6v battery back in it.

That might be easier than adding another 6v battery.
 
Very simple thing to do. When you build the plow also build on a battery box to pack the 12 volt battery you would need for the winch. A 12 volt winch will not work well if at all on 6 volts and would burn out the motor pretty fast and would be extra slow to boot
 
How much you plowing? If it just your drive and you will only be lifting and lowering a few times each time you have to plow then I would go with the "mount a 12 volt battery in a box and just recharge it" seeing as a conversion isn't in your future. Deep cycle RV/Marine batt would be best. Remember to keep a maintainer on it in the off season.

Another idea would be to make a mount for your 3 point to hold the battery and batt box. Then get a short PTO shaft and a couple of pulleys to turn an alternator mounted on the 3 point mount that only charges the batter when the PTO is engaged. Big pully driving a little pully should get an alternator turning fast enough to charge. This kind of setup would also help with traction because of the extra weight hanging from the back of the tractor.

I made a plow like you are talking about last year.
Didn't have any snow so haven't tryed it out. I
have 12 V so the winch works. I'll try to post a
pic. I have added two 2 in. pipes mounted under
the fenders to take the strain from the frnt axel
hope I get to use it this winter.

Good idea for 12V. I use a solar panel as the battery maintainer. Usually good sunshine after the snow, anyhow.

I mounted one on the rear window of my service van. Good even at night with those darn bright lights of the cars and HARLEY"S behind me.

what about mounting a large SA hyd cyl between the 3pt drawbar and the toplink rocker... lift 3pt and compress hyd cyl, nhave those hyds feed a lift cyl for the front snow plow....
 
another vote for a big deep cycle 12v battery in a box close to the winch.
by the time it goes dead, you'll be cold anyway.

if you buy a little cheapo 12v winch, and your plow is heavy, like mine,
mount a snatch block pulley on the plow and run the winch cable around it
and back up to the bumper/winch mount.
single pull, my winch brake wouldn't hold the plow up,
around the snatch block, it works/holds fine.

toplink keeps the bumper from bending down,
and swivels, so it won't bind.
chain you see is just for transport, lift with winch,
hook chain around bumper, lower plow onto chain to take
strain off winch when using the tractor for something else.
 
Small winch like off a ATV would work good for that.
I think adding a battery box on it somewhere is the best idea. You'd probably get scores if not hundreds of winch cycles (up/down) before you needed a charge.
Not to stir up trouble here but I really do not understand the resistance to converting to 12V on a working tractor.
Restoqueen/ originality buffs are a different story.
10SI alternator puts out 35 amps.
I'm overestimating curent draw here but
2 headlights @ 4 amps each
1 tail light @ 2 amps
1 rotating yellow beacon @ 3 amps
Ignition system @ 4 amps =
17 amps total current draw.
Leaves you 18 amps to run the winch and recharge the battery.
No muss. No fuss. No monkeying around with extra batteries.
 
I am not resistant to conv. I just don't have the need and don't want to spend the $ on it right now. I have a brand new 6V battery that would become useless. I really apprectiate yer guys help. I guess I wanted to know if there was a step up converter or something like that I could put in line to the winch to keep from ruining it. Apparently there is not
