Electric Pole Support Wire--Plastic Sleeve?

Ya know how some electric poles will have wires coming down from them nto the ground to act as a support? Usually, these will have yellow plastic sleeves on them, so they're easy to see.

I've got to poles, and the sleeves have long since busted off. Anyone know where I can get new ones? Or do I have to ask the power company?

I usually pick them up along the Interstate, right after an on-ramp. They don't tie'em down good & they land right beside the road.

I work for the electric coop that serves a portion of s.e.mo. You can call your electric provider and tell them that you need new "guy guards". But they are a very low priority to most electric utilities, so don't expect an immediant responce. If the poles are in a high traffic area, such as near a road or drive way, or in a pasture where cows rub the guy wires. Then they will likely put a higher priority on it.

Blue,

Those guards can be very important. About five years ago, a kid in Columbia, TN was electrocuted at his school by playing with the guide wire. He was rocking it back and forth and it came into contact with one of the "hot" wires on the pole. He was killed by the shock.

You might want to take a look at the installation of the guide wire and see if it is anywhere near the power lines. If so, it could pose a hazard.

Georgia Power was installing fiber glass links in the middle of the guide wires a few years ago so that there was an insulation break between the top and the bottom of the wires, thus no need for a plastic shield. I don"t know if they still do that, but you used to able to request them. If you had kids in your house, they were pretty good about responding to your request.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

while electric hazard is probably the reason they are on there, I'm more concerned about my kids and horses running into them (stoopid stupid me) because mine weren't covered in the feilds either.
Slit swimming pool noodles and covered them with those. two peices = 12 feet, like 2 bucks a noodle. nice padding- also works great for roll cages and steering wheels!
Probably on sale now with fall coming!

Just to clear up some confusion here about "guy guards". They are on the guy wires so people can see them and not run over them with their tractors or any other vehicle. They are plastic but I doubt very much if they will insulate you from the high voltage of power lines. About half of our system is 7620 volts and we have a lot of 14400.

Also I want to caution you folks about installing your own stuff on power company property. A lot of poles have been out in the weather for 40 to 50 years. I have had insulators fall apart when we untied the phase wire when replacing the pole. If you shake a pole that has a bad inulator you could get hurt or killed. So please let the power company take care of it.
