Electric razors?

I've often been told that anything I have in my hand becomes a tool of some sort. Well now that I'm officially first shift supervisor I probably should start looking a little more civilized. For years I've shaved every couple days with the cheap disposable razors because I get a 9 alarm razor rash if I shave daily. Years ago I had a Remington electric razor that did an OK job but I often had the rash afterward, tried a Norelco but may as well tried to shave with a washcloth.
Now that time in the morning is at a premium, I'm looking for your opinions of which razor you've found works the best.
Thanks

I don't have an electric razor to recomend. I have a really heavy beard and I haven't found one yet that does a better job than a blade. I hate those cheap razors. What works for me is one of the new three bladed cartridges and I shave in the shower. I get a much better shave that way. A lot closer and more comfortable than an electric. It might take you a week or two to get the hang of it but I think if you try it you might be surprised. I'd rather you put an electric razor in a sock and beat me with it than try shaving with it.

I shave almost everyday. I use a Gillette sensor blade, for over 20 years now. It is the best. Electric razors arent worth a rip. I need a blade. What really sucks is the price of the blades I use/buy has gone from $10 for 10 to $16 for 10. I think that I need the wife to find them on sale and then stock up.

I use a remington triple head electric razor, have a heavy beard, will take your face about a month to get used to it. Works good for me, always use aftershave when finished to condition skin plus smell good :)

Electric razor vary from junk to excellent. Then add the various kinds of beards and shaving styles.
A blade causes ingrown hairs and rotary electric razor rash and razor burn.
Had my best success so far with a 3 Series Braun. Wish I had no been so cheap and bought the 5 series for the better trimmer.

I too had trouble with razor burn. I had to shave twice a day to keep it clean. I used several types of electrics and blades, and never found one I could use. I've had a beard for over 30 years because of it. If I ever shave again, I think I will try a straight razor.

I recently needed a replacement unit.

I used to use Norelco till they priced themselves out.

Then started using Remington 3 head. I could get a whole new rechargable for the cost of replacement heads if I shopped around.

I google shopped the other day and found Remington rechargable 3 headers at Macy's for $20ea I bought 2.

Quite using electric razors years ago because seemed the head wore out to fast and besides that they would cut off the black hair and leave the gray hair. I don't like a beard and don't like to shave. I only try to shave every other day, so half the time I look like a old man.

Used a Norelco for years. Santa wife got me a Remington triple head pivoting gizmo for Christmas. Shaves a whole lot better than the Norelco. Even has a display showing how much time left on the charge. Shave with a razor and cream now rips my tender skin to shreds. Mark

If you shave electric, try some Williams "pre-electric" lotion. Feels and smells like after shave but itdries your face and removes oil so the razor can cut better.

The technology that goes into modern non-electric razors is amazing. "Modern Marvels" did a bit on razor blade manufacturing that really opened my eyes. I don't think electric razor technology will ever catch up. Switch from your disposables to a modern razor like the Gillette Fusion and you won't consider using disposables again. They even have a battery-powered version now that vibrates the blades.

Buy a good razor. I use a Gillette Mach 3. Blades are expensive, but 1 blade will last me a couple weeks shaving once a day. I really like the alchohol free after shave. Wife bought me some Nivea a while back because she had a coupon. Thats some good stuff. Guess that sales gimmick worked on me. I normally wouldn't buy anything "fancy" like that. Kind of expensive also, but worth it.

Can't use an electric, face gets really tender after a couple days. I've tried and retried, but just can't handle them. I have found that the Personna triple blade throw away's are the best on the market. They will usually last 3 weeks or more, but have had them last for over a month. Best razor I have ever used. I keep a year's supply or more on hand just in case my store quits handling them.

Can you get away with shaving last thing before you go to bed? It gives the skin on your face a chance to recover so the gentleness of the razor isn't quite such an issue. I don't think that starting to look a bit ragged later in the day makes the same grooming statement as showing up that way in the morning.

About 15 or so, I am guessing.
I saw a while back a sharpener for the standard safety blades. I dont know if it would work or not.

Those Gillette refills are totally ridiculous in price. I get the same results with a disposable 5 blade razor, available in a 5 pack at Dollar General for about $5. I shave nearly everyday, and that 5 pack is good for 2 to 3 months.

I don't like the modern blade razors. I use my Dad's old Gillete that opens when you rotate the handle, and you insert a double edge blade (Wilkinson) in the top. Use a brush and a cup for soap.

I have a Remington electric rotary and it is ok. I have not used it in years. I have been using a Gillette Quattro (4 blade) for a couple of years and use water only to wet my face first, no shave cream. Either my skin is a little tougher than some or the blades are good?

Braun, can't beat that German made quality.
Dig in deep and buy one of the upper end models, you won't be dissatisfied. Last forever, you will eventually recoup the cost by not having to buy blades all the time. Mark

I use a braun cruzer but, the only thing that doesn't irritate me is an old ironsides razor with a brush and soap disc.

The very best shave I've found to be the gillette fusion blade. I also bought a Panasonic nanotech electric wet or dry shaver. It's a good shaver you can use in shower or with shaving cream or dry. Best price I found was Amazon.

As a young man I used a blade but got horrible rash if I shaved every day. I used to mooch my dad's foils faced remington? He gave me a triple rotary norelco. What a hair pulling piece of junk! He bought me an Eltron foil which is made by Braun. Going on at least 25 years use now with only two foils. Edge trimmer fell off but shaver still works great. He bouhgt himself a low end Braun not too long ago and the edger promptly broke off.

My beard is like wire, electric shavers just stall out with a head full and hang there on my chin til I tear it loose. Have been using those 10 cent Bics for 20 or 30 years. Do give em a break as I have a manchu. Trim it once a week with barber clippers.

I read through all these responses and see a lot of different strokes for different folks. But what this really reminded my roving mind of is when in bootcamp one of the younger ones who wasn't used to shaving skipped it. At morning inspection you got to stand there and watch him dry shave...remember? I bet once was enough...grin. ohfred

With a single blade white bic that the DS had been carrying in his pocket.

Ours kept a bottle of rubbing alcohol for aftershave......

I cheat, I shave in the shower or as soon as I get out. That cured my shaving rash, yes I get 5 o'clock shadow at 4:00 but that is better than getting up extra early to shower and shave in the morning. I use whatever cheap blade that is on sale.

Your beard is out further at night so just shave before bed. As for electric razors. Like others have posted here get a Braun. I have a full beard but I need to shave my cheeks to keep it shaped. I have used a Braun for several years. I shave at night. About once a week I hit it with a blade razor as I have a few course hairs that electrics miss.

Well, there's always the hot wax treatment to remove unwanted hair. Report back how it works on facial hair. Can't be worse than razor burn... can it? Dave

Me too! I still use the Schick double edge razor I got for high school graduation 40+ years ago. I wish it was still possible to get the super quality blades that used to be available. I am not impressed with the ones that I see for sale around here that are marked Stainless Steel, with no other brand name. Where do you get Wilkinsons? I used to prefer Gillette or Schick platinum plus blades, but haven't seen them for about 20 years.

I have tried electric razors, with mixed results. I had a Norelco rotary that always pulled badly and which caused problems with ingrown whiskers. I have thought some of the "foil" type electric razors worked and felt OK, but never used one long term.

When traveling, I have sometimes used disposable razors to avoid hassles with airport security. The twin blade ones I have used were inferior to the 3 or more blade types, but I still prefer my old dependable double edge, non-adjustable Schick. With it I seldom nick myself, with the disposable razors I sometimes have that trouble.

I gave up on electric razors years ago. It took twice as long and gave me a rash. I shave in the shower now with either shave cream or just soap. I have a mirror in there that does not steam up. I also use cheap double edge throw aways. I've tried some of the expensive ones and found that they do not work and better than the cheap ones, at least on me.

One thing is to always be sure to slap the razor on the wall of the shower to get the stubble out from between the blades...nothing will slice you quicker than that.
