electrical on 9N?

Hi Folks,
Mowing tonight I had the old 9N quit and then not even crank over when trying to restart. Just dead air. Starts fine from charger.
Information: It mowed for one hour no problem, then quit twice in the next hour after about 15-20 minutes of running. Sounds like it is running a bit rough. Starts right up with the charger or jumped from my car. Have I screwed it up by jumping it from a car or using the 12 volt setting on my charger to start it? The 6 volt setting doesn't start it. I have replaced the ignition switch last spring. Charging gauge used to stick and I would tap it every time I stopped for the day so the battery wouldn't drain out. That sticking stopped a while ago so I quit tapping it. Any ideas? It is a 6 volt system.

check all electrical connections for corrosion, clean with wire brush as needed--also check voltage on battery and make sure it doesn't have a dead cell. charge on 6 volt charger overnight then check charge in morning. any local parts store should be able to check battery. if these suggestions don't help please repost

Caroline, when I had similar issues with my 8N I moved the grounding point from the battery box to a bolt for the coverplate for the steering gearbox. Had to buy a new longer groundstrap but it fixed me right up.

If you will take a screwdriver and "jumper" it across the two posts on the starter switch that the battery cable is connected to on one side and the cable to the starter is connected to on the the other side,this should let battery power go from the battery to the starter and crank the engine over.If it cranks over this way,your starter switch is malfunctioning.If it don't,your battery is probably bad,or at least needs recharging.MAKE SURE TRACTOR IS NOT IN GEAR BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS. don b

I will be working on the tractor Thursday most likely. I can post some updates then. I knew I should have just used the 6 volt charge setting but it wouldn't start on that one. Anyway, I will post an update tomorrow. Thank you everyone, just wanted you to know I wasn't ignoring advice!

Caroline.......you have discharged battery syndrome. You know that roundcan cut-out you"ve been beating on, is NO LONGER working. Unfortunately, current replacement cut-outs are NOT reliable as you"ve found out. There is a solid state cut-out that is popular with early model A enthusiasts. There is also a way to install a 4-arm bridge rectifier from Radio Shack for about $5 (cheap) Iff"n you can wait "till I gitt back from N MEX, I"ll be very happy to fix it for you.........Dell

new battery, new cutoff switch, yes the ones Dell says are lousy, anyway starts fine no amps on ammeter. Ok to mow? Should I mess with the generator adjustment screw?
