electronic ignition conversions

has anyone had any experiance {good or bad} with the electronic ignition conversions on their tractors? I have had ok luck with the O.E.M. but if I can get the old 1655 to start quicker that would be good! I had lots of trouble getting her to start with a elcheapo battery that i replaced with a new one from the local deere shop that appeared to help a lot

I've got one on my 1550 and the 7300 combine. Unbelievable difference. I'd had a lot of trouble with the points on the 1550. Electronic solved it. The combine ran extremely rough, started hard. Runs perfect now. A whole different machine.

Like RR I replaced the point in my 1600 w/ the pertronix kit and it made it into a completely diferent machine. Lots less down time due to the points constantly going out.

I agree with the other comments about making a big difference on my 2-44. I found that using their epoxy coil ( High Vibration #40611) and upping the spark plug gap from .025 to .035 just make the tractor a new machine. I had gone through 4 new coils in the previous year to Pertronix. That was 6 years ago and not one problem since.
Now, whenever I checkout the points on a tractor, I always checkout the coil ( by replacing with a known good one). Likewise, whenever I have a battery problem, I always checkout the alternator/generator/VR. The root cause of electrical problems are very often elsewhere from the symptoms.
Good luck

I have had it on my 550 for around 4 years now with no problems. Id recommend getting the coil with it. It really helped my tractor. Quicker starts and a good increase in power.

When looking at a starting problem with these old electrical systems, even 12 volts,I have found a good annalog meter works best for finding voltage drops during cold crank starts. Old wires and gauges build up resistance being corroded or undersized in important circuits like the power supply to the ignition circuit. At each check point attach the meter and then crank the engine with the coil wire out and grounded.
This summer I thought I had a problem with the battery but it was in the starter armature, a open winding. Now looking back this problem haunted me for more than a year before I properly delt with it. This starter,an old Prestolite in a Wisconsin never cranked like this before and now starts great all the time.
The biggest reason I would change is because of the steep price on new ignition parts.

I installed one on my 1850 4 yrs ago except for my alt going bad and causing a spike in the voltage up around 20 volts, that burned the ignitor up installed new one, runs great.
