Electronic ignition convertion

I have a 12V 8n with a front mount distributor, that I want to convert to an electronic ignition. T he serial # on my tractor is 54350 which I think it makes it to be a 1947. My question is which electronic ignition should I get, since this web site shows two part #'s. the two #'s shown are 1247xt- for 149.50 and the other 1247 for 89.45. thanx everyone for your imput.

xt suffix is for eXternal Coil. That is to convert from a front mount coil to the external round coil.

Alvarado.........the slightly weird 4-nipple frontmount distributor doesn't have the greatest reputation for reliability to the neubie owner. The "infamous ballast resistor" confuses many. The squarecan ignition coil requires the ballast resistor. (whether 6-or-12 volts) And even worse, you haffta remove 2-bolts to work on yer ignition points ($10, cheap) on the kitchen table. (15-minute job)

That said, the 1247xt kit includes a "different" roundcan ignition coil and adaptor plate; and really clever expensive solidstate points module. And a mandatory 12-volt negative ground electrical system. All this for $150.

And to top everything off, the installation instructions leave something to be desired. 'speshelly iff'n you don't speak 'lectrons. We constantly gitt inquiries about why my $$$ electronic ignition don't work. Thats why you pay BIG BUCKS for a supposedly bolt-in installation. It ain't.

Me, I would NOT mess with the cheaper non-coil kit 'cuz of the squarecan coil reliability issues. I can change a whole lotta points every year for that kinda $$$.........Dell, retired Electronics Engr who has built and installed electronic ignitions since 1963

Acutally the only difference between the 1247XT and the 1247 is that the xt comes with a coil and cap they both have the same eletronic conversion module and yes they are easy to install.
